On This Date
The long march to today.

In 1527 – Englishman John Rut sends the first known letter from North America. Rut was the master of the ship Mary Guildford which had been dispatched by King Henry VII to find a passage to Asia and his letter was to Henry, informing him of the details of his voyage so far and his plans to sail south. Rut returned to England the following year before disappearing from History’s ledger.

In 1936 – Jesse Owens of the United States wins the gold medal in the 100-meters at the Berlin Olympics with a wind-aided time of 10.3 seconds. Owens beat fellow American Ralph Metcalfe and Norwegian Tinus Osendarp for the first of four gold medals he would win at the Games. Earlier, in his opening heat, Owens had matched the Olympic record with a non-wind-aided time of 10.3 seconds.

In 1974 – John Denver is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Annie’s Song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Great Britain and peaked at #9 on Billboard’s country chart. It was the fourth of 15 Top 40 hits for Denver, his fourth of seven Top 10 hits and his second of four #1 songs. The song spent 17 weeks on the chart, including eleven weeks in the Top 40 and seven weeks in the Top 10.
