On This Date
The long march to today.

In 1783 – The climactic eruption of Mount Asama in central Japan begins. The eruption lasted for 15 days and killed approximately 1,400 people. The damage to farmland exacerbated an ongoing famine, leaving farmland fallow for several years, resulting in the deaths of 20,000 more. The eruption had begun in May. The volcano is located about 100 miles northwest of Tokyo and erupts fairly regularly, the last time in 2019.

In 1936 – Jesse Owens of the United States wins his second gold medal of the Berlin Olympics, winning the long jump in an Olympic record of 26 feet 5 and 5/16th  inches. Owens defeated Luz Long of Germany and Naoto Tajima of Japan and was the ninth time in ten Olympics the US had won the event. Owens had won the 100 meters the previous day and would win two more gold medals at the Berlin Games

In 1958 – The Billboard Hot 100 debuts with Ricky Nelson at #1 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Poor Little Fool. The Hot 100 replaced both the Most Played by Jockeys and the Top 100 charts, while the Best Sellers in Stores chart would continue until mid-October. The song also went to #4 in Great Britain and peaked at #3 on Billboard’s country and soul charts. It was the first of two #1 songs for Nelson on the Hot 100.
