History’s long march.

In 1792 – The US Mint is established when President George Washington signs the Coinage Act of 1792. The act provided for a variety of denominations of coins from copper half-cent pieces to gold $10 pieces – known as eagles – and denominations from nickels to dollars were silver. The act also provided that citizens could bring gold or silver to the mint to have it coined free of charge. The first mint was in Philadelphia, and today there are also mints in West Point, New York, San Francisco, and Denver.

In 1990 – The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels win the NCAA Division I basketball title with a 103-73 victory over the Duke Blue Devils at McNichols Arena in Denver. It remains the only national title for UNLV and was the fourth of six runner-up finishes for Duke. The 30 point margin of victory remains a record for NCAA championship games and it was also the first time the final minute of a period in an NCAA tournament game was measured in tenths of a second.

In 1977 – Kenny Rogers is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of two consecutive weeks with Lucille. The song also went #1 country and pop in Canada, and also topped pop charts in Yugoslavia, South Africa, and Great Britain, peaked at #5 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s third-biggest country song of the year. It was the first of 16 country chart #1s for Rogers in a country chart career that spanned from 1975 through 2007.

The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Life is never easy. There is work to be done and obligations to be met – obligations to truth, to justice, and to liberty.
