The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has lunch at the college dining hall. Today’s Diary.

Well, actually the sign said it was Salisbury steak – basically a mini meatloaf with brown gravy thrown on it, known as Nairobi trail markers in the Nav – but ol’ Sparrow knows chicken fried steak with white gravy when he sees it…I don’t understand this at all, what the hell are they teaching these kids???…To mislabel food offerings???…That you can just whip up whatever the hell you want and call it whatever the f*ck you want???…I can barely boil water and even I know what is and what is not Salisbury steak…

History’s long march.

In 1928 – The St. Francis dam, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, collapses, resulting in a flood that kills at least 430 people. Several investigations were conducted, which generally concluded that an unstable soil foundation caused the collapse, perhaps due to ancient mudslides. It remains the second-highest death toll for a California disaster, trailing only the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which killed more than 3,000 people. The dam was completed in 1926.

In 1935 – The St Louis Eagles play their final home game in their only NHL season, a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.  The Eagles finished the season 11-31-6 and in last place in the Canadian Division. The NHL assumed control of the franchise after the season, but couldn’t find a suitable buyer. The Eagles had begun play in 1883 as the Ottawa Senators, then an amateur team who had moved to St Louis prior to the season.

In 1949 – Blue Barron & His Orchestra are at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the first of two consecutive weeks with Cruising Down the River. It was the third and final chart single for Barron on a Billboard chart and remains his only #1 hit. The song was replaced at #1 by a version by Russ Morgan & His Orchestra, a phenomenon not unprecedented on Billboard pop charts of the era.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
Knowledge is power.

The longest game in NCAA baseball history is 25 innings, when Texas defeated Boston College 3-2 in an NCAA regional playoff game in Austin on May 30, 1991. The NCAA Division II and III record books list records occurring in 22- and 23-inning games, but neither has an entry for a longest game.
