The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow runs into a potential Couple of the Year candidate. Today’s Diary.

At first, we thought they were together but if they were they were the most incongruous couple we’d ever seen, topping even that tidy, middle-aged Asian man and the young Black guy with dreadlocks we saw in a Sin City taco shop ages ago: he was sub-Saharan African and she was purebred, All-American white trash…It turns out they weren’t, tho…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1962 – In the Cuban Missile Crisis, nuclear war is likely averted when Soviet naval officer Vasily Arkhipov, the second-in-command of the submarine B-59, declines to join the ship’s captain and political officer – approval from all three was required – in authorizing the firing a nuclear torpedo at a flotilla of US Navy ships in international waters off the coast of Cuba. The diesel submarine, with batteries low and a broken air conditioning system, eventually surfaced and returned home. Far from being stigmatized for his role, Arkhipov would later command other submarines and submarine squadrons and retired as a vice admiral. He died in 1998.

In 1984 – Rueben Mayes of the Washington State Cougars establishes a new NCAA major division record for most rushing yards in a game in a 50-41 victory over the Oregon Ducks. Mayes rushed for 357 yards to break the record of 356 yards established by Eddie Lee Ivery of Georgia Tech in 1978. The mark was broken in 1989 by Anthony Thompson of Indiana (377 yards) and the record is now held by Samaje Perine of Oklahoma, who rushed for 427 yards in a 2014 game. The all-division record is 465 yards, by Cartel Brooks of Division III Heidelberg in 2013.

In 1979 – Led Zeppelin is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the seventh and final consecutive week with In Through the Out Door. It was the eighth of 13 Top 10 albums for the group and was their sixth of seven #1s. The album also went to #1 in Canada, New Zealand, and the band’s native Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 26th-biggest album of the year. The album yielded one chart single, Fool in the Rain, which peaked at #21 on the Hot 100 is was the band’s final studio release after the death of drummer John Bonham in Sept 1980.
