History’s long march.

In 1667 – Dr Jean-Baptiste Denys of France performs the first blood transfusion when he transferred a lamb’s blood into a feverish 15-year-old boy. Denys later faced trial after a patient died following a transfusion and though cleared, he was prohibited from performing further transfusions. Previous transfusion experiments had been conducted with two dogs and the first human-to-human blood transfusion came in 1795, though the results were not published.

In 1984 – Thomas Hearns of the US retains his WBC super welterweight title with a second-round TKO over Roberto Duran of Panama at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. It was the second title defense for Hearns, who previously had held the WBA welterweight title. while Duran was knocked down for the first time in his career. In some jurisdictions, the super welterweight title is known as the light middleweight title.

In 1968 – Simon and Garfunkel is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with Mrs Robinson. It was the fifth of nine Top 10 hits for the duo and was their second of three #1 songs. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #8 in Great Britain, and was from the soundtrack to the movie the Graduate, which was in its eighth of nine non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s album chart.
