The Diary of a Nobody/August 4

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, August 4
It was a very strong troika at the gym this morning…(This followed about as half-ass a Level I cleaning as we are capable of.)…Despite waking up tired (see Sleep Log below), weights were what we’ve come to expect on Thursdays, cardio was strong the whole way, and the soak was Soak of the Year.

Recall the usual Sparrow hot tub had a broken heater last week, so we were obliged to use another one, one that has two really good jets…Also recall ol’ Sparrow has had some pain in his right shoulder blade that the jet helped alleviate…Well, we were back at the jet today, despite the fact the heater is back to working at our usual hot spring.

The only fly in the ointment was some jerk face was using one of the jets and while there are two, they are right across from each other and pretty close, too, close enuff that someone can’t really utilize it and stretch out without the other person thinking you’re attempting familiarities…But he left soon enuff was able to get some first-class hydrotherapy in on the shoulder…The tub is narrow enuff so you can slouch enuff so the jet completely targets the shoulder AND stretch your legs out and have the rest on the other stone bench…Plus, there’s a little notch on the stone wall where you can rest your head.

The lawn isn’t growing as fast as it used to, so mowing was deferred until next week, but before heading out for the next county we did spray the latest all-natural fertilizer application…The lawn is starting to be less green than it’s been, but that’s because, in deference to the drought, we are not watering as much as we used to, so perhaps the fertilizer is keeping things greener than it would be without it…It’s still looking pretty good tho from the street and is a lot better than some other lawns on Main Street and that’s good for morale.

In nutrition news, the Veggie Patty Era (VPE) appears to be over; they simply never made it into regular rotation and it certainly wasn’t from a lack of effort on our part: we gave them a good run…Recently, we’ve taken to making a beef patty every morning when we got home from the hotel and that’s been working out great…Recall last month they gave us gift cards at the Human Services Department, $250 for a grocery store, and ol’ Sparrow bought some of those one-pound tubes of 93% lean ground beef, with each one providing a couple of meals.

Well, today, we really made out on the ground beef front at the grocery store in the next county…We were prepared to buy three or four at the regular price – plus a steak for later in the day – but they were on sale for $3.77 each, which they are from time to time when they need to get rid of them.

Christ, I could think of no reason not to stock up…They had plenty of them, too, so even a dozen or so would leave plenty for others, and we stood there scratching a chin with our hand considering the matter: they were on sale, and at a hefty savings to boot…We have a freezer…And a gift card…So we ended up taking twelve and then throwing in one more for good measure…We splurged on a suh-weet ribeye, too, and the gift card has to be down to near a hundred dollars now.

$90 at the retailer…Christ, prices are going up…Some cat food…Some cat litter…A tripod for the mobile phone…Two cucumbers…A small thingy of chicken salad….And not too many other things, either, because we were well under the 20-item limit for the express lane…Carrie, the checker, asked me to check the receipt to make sure something wasn’t rung up twice, and I went thru the motions of doing that, but of course, she hadn’t.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 2000 Wednesday until 0130 Thursday…5.5 hours for the day and 26.5 hours for the day…Boy, this was a lousy sleep, what with waking up to use the can seemingly every hour on the hour…We were still tired when we got up, too; it was as if we’d done jumping jacks all nite.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
