Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1969 – Warren Burger is sworn in as the chief justice of the United States, replacing Earl Warren, who had retired. He was not the first choice for the position as President Lyndon Johnson had nominated Abe Fortas, who was not confirmed by the Senate and Richard Nixon nominated Burger after he assumed office. Burger served until his retirement in 1986 and later served as chancellor of William and Mary College.

In 1917 – Ernie Shore of the Boston Red Sox establishes a major league for most consecutive batters retired by a relief pitcher in a 4-0 win over the Washington Senators. Shore retired all 26 batters he faced after coming on in the first inning after starting pitcher Babe Ruth was ejected after walking the leadoff batter Ray Morgan. Morgan was caught stealing and for years Shore was credited with a perfect game, though that was later changed to a combined no-hitter. His record still stands.

In 1979 – Donna Summer is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final non-consecutive week with Hot Stuff. The song went to #1 in four other countries, including Switzerland and Japan, peaked at #11 in Great Britain, at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart, was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year and their 12th-biggest of the decade. It was the third of four #1 songs for Summer and the song won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
