In 1948 – The Lottery, a short story by Shirley Jackson, is published in The New Yorker. The story concerns a small town that holds an annual lottery where the winner is stoned to death, in the belief that the sacrifice will result in a bountiful harvest and general prosperity. Though critically acclaimed, the story garnered immediate negative mail. In 2006 – Shakira and Wyclef Jean are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Hips Don’t Lie. It remains the only #1 hit on the Hot 100 for Shakira and was the second and most recent pop #1 for Jean.
