The Diary of a Nobody – The acoustics in the new county building continue to make every chat sound like armageddon.

…and it was loud enuff so that not for the first time ol’ Sparrow was obliged to turn up the volume on whatever crap he was watching.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1930 – The Chrysler Building in New York City opens, the tallest building in the world at 1,046 feet. Located at the corner of Lexington Avenue and 43rd Street on the east side of Manhattan, it would be the tallest building in the world for eleven months, eclipsed by the Empire State Building the following May 1. The record is now held by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, at 2,717 feet.

In 1979 – Rick Mears wins the Indianapolis 500, taking the lead for good with 18 laps remaining and beating A.J. Foyt and Mike Mosely. The race was shrouded in some controversy, including problems with qualifying and equipment, plus a squabble between sanctioning bodies USAC and CART. It was the first of a record-tying four Indy titles for Mears, who was the first winner born after World War II.

In 1967 – The Young Rascals are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Groovin’. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #8 in Great Britain, at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 9th-biggest song of the year. It was the fourth of 13 Top 40 hits for the group, their third of seven Top 10 hits and their second of three #1s. Later in the year, an instrumental version by Booker T. and the M.G.s peaked at #21 on the Hot 100 and at #10 on the soul chart.
