The Bottom Line
Notes from around our Human Experience

GAYLON FOR CONGRESS: VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN: As if we haven’t lost enough elections, we’ve thrown our hat in the ring for the Colorado Libertarian Party’s nomination for Congress, from District 2.

Dry, Technical Matter: Longtime fans of ours know this is a change from past campaigns when we were in District 3, a rather conservative district that was less open than usual to whackjob third-party candidates. Now though, our district includes the liberal bastion of Boulder and we enjoyed good support up there in 2014, so who knows.?

Running The Numbers: We are zero-for-five in elections, having lost general elections for the US Senate in 2014 and the US House in 2018 and 2016. We also lost primaries in 2012 and 2020, one of the few Libertarians anywhere to have lost two primaries.

Look What We Did, Not Bad: We did set a record in 2014, though. Our 52,876 votes (2.6%) set a record for a third-party candidate in a Colorado US Senate election. The mark has since been broken.

Get Your Notebooks Out…Class Is In Session: As usual, we are the only peace candidate to be found. America has been at war every day since 1989 and most days since Pearl Harbor and no country has survived perpetual war and if you think America will be the first you are high…Legally in more and more states and we have long said that if we don’t do something our country will collapse, perhaps before this half-century is out. Now, if you believe perpetual war is a guarantor of American success, don’t bother with me, go vote for a Democrat or a Republican and it really doesn’t matter which one.

But…: If you don’t like war any more than I do, Gaylon For Congress deserves your support.

The Bottom Line: The incumbent is a Democrat named Joe Neguse, who is in his third term. We don’t know much about him and we really don’t care because we are not running against him, we’re running for our country. It needs our help; it needs concerned and conscientious citizens taking charge on Election Day. It’s time for you and me – we the people – to take charge.

We spent part of the morning at the veterans service office (VSO) farting around with our phone trying to – and we are not making this up – remove a hair that had gotten underneath the screen protector.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1992 – The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan officially ends when the final Soviet troops are withdrawn. Though History records they lost the war, they only lost about 17,000 troops, a fraction of the estimated 850,000 to 2 million Afghan soldiers and civilians killed. The Soviets had invaded in 1979 to support the pro-Soviet government that was in place and their invasion let to boycotts of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

In 1932 – Eddie Eagan of the US becomes the only person in Olympic history to win gold medals in different sports at the Summer and Winter Olympics. Eagan was a member of the winning 4-man bobsleigh team and in 1920 and 1924 Eagan had won boxing gold medals. Gillis Grafstrom of Sweden is the only other athlete to win Summer and Winter Games gold medals, having won them in figure skating at the 1920 Summer Games and at the 1924, 1928, and 1932 Winter Olympics.

In 1975 – Linda Ronstadt is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with You’re No Good. It was the third of 18 Top 40 hits for Ronstadt, her first of ten Top 10 hits, and remains her only #1 pop hit. The song also went Top 10 pop in Canada and on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart and was from the album Heart Like A Wheel, which was in its only week at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

…the wine trade of Bordeaux was too precious a boon to England to be lamely lost merely to defer by a few years the death of 10,000 Englishmen.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
Knowledge is power.

The last diesel submarine warship in the US Navy was the USS Blueback (SS-581), which was decommissioned in 1990. The research submarine USS Dolphin (AGSS-555) was decommissioned in 2007.
