In 1789 – The first standing US army – a force of 1,787 soldiers – is formed by the 1st US Congress. Acting on the session’s final day at the urging of President George Washington, who was concerned the country would lose the expertise gained by the soldiers who fought in the Revolution and served under the Articles of Confederation. The first US army was the Continental Army, formed on June 14, 1775, which the Army regards as its official birthday.
In 1968 – Chuck Latourette of the St Louis Cardinals establishes a new NFL single-game record for the highest punt return average (min. 3 returns) in a 21-20 win over the New Orleans Saints. Latourette returned three punts for 143 yards, an average of 47.7 yards per return, and a touchdown. Research into whose record he broke was conclusive, and the record is now 65.0 yards by Nyheim Hines of Indianapolis in 2019. Latourette, a defensive back out of Rice, originally declined to play pro ball to pursue a medical degree.
In 1990 – Nelson is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with (Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection. It was the first of four Top 40 hits and two Top 10 hits for the duo, and remains their only #1 song. The song also peaked at #54 in Great Brain and was Billboard’s 27th-biggest song of the year. The song made the Nelson family the second family to have three generations of #1 acts: Matthew and Gunnar Nelson are the twin sons of Rick Nelson and the grandson of Ozzie Nelson (who went to #1 on the Your Hit Parade survey). They joined Pat Boone, Red Foley (Boone’s father-in-law) and Debby Boone (Foley’s granddaughter and Pat Boone’s daughter) as families that have produced three generations of acts with #1 hits.
