In 1940 – The first McDonald’s restaurant is opened by Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, the restaurant trimmed its menu and eliminated carhop service, and the McDonalds sold out to Ray Kroc in 1955. Today, McDonald’s has over 40,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries and is the world’s largest restaurant chain by sales volume. Ten countries have one restaurant, including Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, and Monaco.
In 1953 – Rocky Marciano retains the undisputed world heavyweight boxing title, defeating Jersey Joe Walcott with a first-round knockout at Chicago Stadium. It was the first defense of the title Marciano had won the previous year against Walcott, who retired after the fight, while Marciano would hold the title until he retired in 1955. Back then, titles were sanctioned by the New York State Athletic Commission, Ring magazine, and the National Boxing Association, now the WBC.
In 1965 – The soundtrack to the movie Mary Poppins is at #1 on Billboard’s Top LPs chart – a predecessor to the Billboard 200 – for the eighth of 14 consecutive weeks. The album remained on the chart for 114 weeks, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s #1 album of the year. It won Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Chim Chim Cher-ee) and Grammy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Recording for Children. It remains one of the few #1 albums to not produce a Hot 100 single.
