In 1977 – David Berkowitz, a 24-year-old post office worker, is arrested in Yonkers, New York for a series of killings History refers to as the Son of Sam murders. Berkowitz would plead guilty to six murders and during his confession, he claimed he killed because a neighbor’s dog was demanding the blood of pretty, young girls. Now 73, Berkowitz is serving the first of six life sentences and was last denied parole two years ago.
In 1888 – Tim Keefe of the New York Giants establishes a new major league record for most consecutive wins in a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. It was the 19th consecutive win for Keefe, breaking the record of 18 done by Charlie “Old Hoss” Radbourn in 1884, and the record is now 24 consecutive games by Carl Hubbel in 1936-37. Keefe’s mark remains the single-season record.
In 1991 – Bryan Adams is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of seven consecutive weeks with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You. The song also went to #1 in 20 other countries – including Israel, Norway, and Great Britain, where it spent 16 consecutive weeks at the top, still a British record for most consecutive weeks at #1. The song was Billboard’s #1 song of the year, its 37th biggest of the decade, and was the second of four #1s for Adams.
