In 1901 – Theodore Roosevelt becomes president of the United States following the death of William McKinley, who had been shot in Buffalo September 6. Roosevelt was on vacation at the time, and was inaugurated in Buffalo before returning to Washington. Roosevelt would be elected in 1904 and served until 1909 and before being elected vice president had also served as an assistant secretary of the navy and as governor of New York. McKinley’s assassin, Leon Czolgosz had been arrested at the scene and would be executed in October.
In 1865 – Andrew Strath of Scotland wins the British Open, beating Willie Park, Sr, by two strokes at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. It was the only major win for Strath, and was the third of four runner-up finishes for Park to go along with four titles. Prestwick hosted 24 Opens over the years, including the first eleven and its last one in 1925. The tournament was played in one day, consisting of three 12-hole rounds.
In 1985 – John Parr is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with St Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion). It was Parr’s third chart single, his second and final Top 40 hit and remains his only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and peaked at #6 in Parr’s native Great Britain. Parr co-wrote the song with David Foster and the song spent 22 weeks on the Hot 100, 14 weeks in the Top 40 and seven weeks in the Top 10.
