GAYLON FOR CONGRESS…VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN: There is really only one issue in this campaign: reelect the status quo or try something different.
Definition Of Terms: The status quo is the ignorance of Donald Trump, the Republicans who are enabling him, and the Democrats who are doing nothing about it. It is giving us perpetual war, higher prices, and $40 trillion in debt.
USA! USA! This is not sustainable and, eventually, our country is going to be destroyed. We will no longer be able to govern ourselves, and someone will come in and do it for us.
Dry, Technical Matter: America has been at war every day for 36 years, since we invaded Panama in 1989, and we have spent over $8 trillion on these wars, a figure that includes direct operational costs, VA care for veterans, and interest on the debt needed to pay for them.
Fly In The Ointment: Our current war with Iran is illegal, immoral, and stupid. Illegal because it was not declared by Congress as required by the Constitution. Immoral because we bombed schoolgirls, a war crime no one has yet answered for. Stupid because there is no way to gauge victory. What are we fighting for? To open the Strait of Hormuz? It was open before the war, and you do not have to be General MacArthur to know fighting to regain conditions before a war is witless.
The Bottom Line: But witlessness is President Trump’s stock-in-trade. From – among other things – an incompetent COVID response to Canada as the 51st state to a war that has no point, America is being governed by an ignorant liar, a man of no moral or intellectual substance, and – shocker – we are being governed accordingly. We deserve better than this, but we are not going to get better than this until you and me – we the people – start demanding better than the status quo on Election Day.

In 1159 – Alexander III is elected pope in Rome following the death of Adrian IV. Some in the church did not recognize Alexander and elected Victor IV antipope. Alexander reigned until 1181 and was succeeded by Lucius III. Alexander’s papacy saw four antipopes, the last of which was Innocent III, whose reign ended in 1180 after he and supporters were trapped in a castle in southern Italy.
In 1892 – James Corbett wins the world heavyweight boxing title, defeating champion John L Sullivan with a 21st-round knockout in New Orleans. It was the first major heavyweight title fight held under modern rules, which called for 3-minute rounds, 5-ounce gloves, and a 10-second knockdown rule. Corbett would only defend his title twice before losing it five years later, and this was the only loss for Sullivan, who retired after the bout with 47 wins and two draws.
In 1963 – The Angels are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with My Boyfriend’s Back. It was the third of four Top 40 hits for the group, and remains their only Top 10 hit. The song also hit #1 in New Zealand, peaked at #50 in Great Britain, reached #2 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was their 9th-biggest song of the year. The song was written by three men.
