In 1929 – The first Academy Awards are held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. The ceremony was hosted by Douglas Fairbanks last 15 minutes and there was no drama as the winners had been previously announced. The term Oscar came into general use within a few years and was officially adopted by the Academy in 1939. It remains the only Oscars ceremony not broadcast on either TV or radio.
In 1964 – Northern Dancer, ridden by Bill Hartack, wins the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Earlier, Northern Dancer had won the Kentucky Derby, and would later finish third in the Belmont Stakes, becoming the sixth of 23 horses to win the first two Triple Crown races and lose the Belmont. It was the second of three Preakness wins for Hartack, and his sixth of nine Triple Crown race wins.
In 1970 – The Moments are at #1 on Billboard’s Best Selling Soul Singles chart for the first of five consecutive weeks with Love on a Two-Way Street. It was the first of six Top 10 soul hits for the group – which became Ray, Goodman & Brown in 1980 – and their first of three #1s. The song also peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 and was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest soul song of the year and its 25th-biggest pop hit of the year. In 1981, a version by Stacy Lattisaw went #2 soul and #26 pop.
