In 1611 – The King James version of the Bible is published in London. The version had been commissioned by King James I in 1604, was the third English translation of the Bible approved by the Church of England, and would replace the Geneva Bible in popularity. The first English translation of the Bible had been made by William Tyndale, whose New Testament appeared in 1526.
In 1939 – Lou Gehrig’s record streak of 2,130 consecutive major league baseball games comes to an end, when he sits out the New York Yankees’ 22-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Gehrig was already suffering from the disease that would later bear his name and took himself out of the lineup. The streak had started on June 1, 1925, and Gehrig broke Everett Scott’s record 1,307 games and the record is now 2,632 by Cal Ripken, Jr.
In 1964 – The Beatles are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fifth and final consecutive week with Can’t Buy Me Love. The song followed She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand at #1, marking the only time in Hot 100 history an act replaced themselves twice at the top, and the 14 consecutive weeks at #1 by one act was a record that no longer has any statistical significance. The song went to #1 in six other countries, including Sweden and Great Britain, and was the group’s third of a Hot 100-record 20 #1 songs.
