In 1958 – Pioneer 1, is launched by the US, bound for lunar orbit. The capsule didn’t make it, though, as guidance system errors resulted in velocity shortfalls that did not allow the craft to escape Earth orbit. It flew to a height of 70,712 miles before beginning its descent back to Earth, and landed in the South Pacific two days later. Pioneer 0, launched by the Air Force in August, had exploded after 73 seconds, at an altitude of 9.4 miles
In 2020 – Rafael Nadal of Spain wins the French Open, defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. It was a record 13th French Open title for Nadal and his record-tying 20th Grand Slam title, a mark now held by Djokovic with 24. It was the fourth and most recent French Open finals loss for Djokovic, to go along with three titles. The tournament had originally been scheduled for the spring, but was moved to the COVID pandemic.
In 1969 – Credence Clearwater Revival is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the second of four consecutive weeks with Green River. It was the third chart album for the group, their second of six Top 10s, and their first of two #1 albums. The album also peaked at #26 on Billboard’s soul album chart and at #20 in Great Britain, and produced two Top 10 hits, Bad Moon Rising and the title track, both of which reached #2.
