Notes From Around Our Human Experience

QUOTE THAT SUCKER: One of the oldest quotes comes from the 1st-century BC, originally credited to a Jewish leader and scholar named Hillel the Elder.

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Gaylon For Congress…Vote Early, Vote Often: This is true for this year’s midterms. Our government is not serving us well. From the idiocy of Donald Trump to the Republicans who enable him, to the Democrats standing by, scratching their navels and merely taking it all in, to a media that refuses to call a spade a spade and has legitimized all of it.

Dry, Technical Matter: We deserve better than this. We deserve better than perpetual war. We have been at war every day for over 36 years, and there is no end in sight. No nation has survived perpetual war, and America will not be the first. We deserve better than $40 trillion of debt, too. We deserve an economy anchored in low taxes and free markets, not high taxes and tariffs.

FunFact: We deserve to only fight wars that have been declared by Congress, as mandated in the Constitution, a provision that could not be more violated if prizes were issued for non-compliance.

The Bottom Line: Over the years, running for office, we’ve said that America has until this half-century is out to get our act together, but Donald Trump has sped up that timeline. We cannot continue with ignorance, perpetual and mindless wars, and $40 trillion of debt with impunity. Eventually we will collapse. Our time is now and it is up to us because you and me – we the people – are the only change on this ballot.

Editor’s Note: Gaylon is the Libertarian Party’s nominee for Congress from Colorado’s 2nd District. Visit his campaign site here.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1862 – Confederate forces under generals Stonewall Jackson and A.P. Hill defeat a Union garrison at the Battle of Harper’s Ferry (Maryland). The victory resulted in the capture of over 12,000 Union troops, the largest Union surrender of the Civil War and the largest US surrender until the fall of Bataan in World War II. The momentum was short-lived, as General Lee was forced to evacuate Maryland two days later after the Battle of Antietem.

In 1995 – Ozzie Smith of the St Louis Cardinals establishes a new major league record for most career double plays by a shortstop in a 7-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smith’s 6th-inning double play gave him 1,554 for his career, breaking the record established by Luis Aparicio between 1956-73. Smith retired the following year with 1,590 double plays, and the record for shortstops is now 1,734 by Omar Vizquel between 1989-2012.

In 1973 – Helen Reddy is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Delta Dawn. It was the second of six Top 10 hits for Reddy and her second and final #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada, Reddy’s native Australia, and New Zealand, and was Billboard’s 14th-biggest song of the year. In 1972, a version by Tanya Tucker went #6 country.
