Extra, extra, read all about it.
In 1968 – The USS Scorpion (SSN 589) sinks in 9,800 feet of water in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 400 miles southwest of the Azores. The exact cause of the catastrophe remains unknown, with leading theories including a torpedo explosion or a hydrogen explosion during a battery charge. Ninety-nine men died, and the Scorpion was the second US nuclear-powered submarine to sink, after the Thresher in 1963.
In 1990 – Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs establishes a new major league record for most intentional walks in a game in a 2-1, 16-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Dawson was intentionally walked five times, breaking the 9-inning record of four intentional walks, done several times, and the record still stands. Dawson also had a hit in three official at-bats in the game.
In 1971 – Three Dog Night is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the sixth and final consecutive week with Joy to the World. It was the fifth of eleven Top 10 hits for the group and was their second of three #1s. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #24 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s #1 song of the year. The song was written by Hoyt Axton, who joined his mother Mae (Heartbreak Hotel) as the writer of a #1 song.
