The Diary of a Nobody/January 16

Editor’s Note: Diary entries may be a bit shorter on occasion while Gaylon works on a project

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

The Night At GHSD
Not for the first time, Travis and yours truly really stole money at the General Hospital Security Department (GHSD) tonite…Most others did, too: the ER could’ve taken the nite off, and while the floor had a few patients, apparently nurses there had given their patients enuff drugs to sleep the whole nite.

There was an escort to the birth ward, tho, and it generated a good laff…We were escorting a pretty girl and her friend (where the dad was wasn’t known) down the long hallway when we passed the door to the elevators that go to the basement…The door – like most doors here – has touch free opening, and while we didn’t reach a hand out to activate the sensor, yours truly passed by close enuff to open it…The soon-to-be mommy looked at me suspiciously, a look we met…It was followed by the classic Sparrow pause (CSP)…Then we patted her shoulder reassuringly:

But don’t worry, this place isn’t haunted…
She gave the line a pretty good chuckle, but she still had a suspicious look in her eye.
– I mean, it’s not as if you’re going to walk out of here with octuplets or anything…Sometimes doors open.

With the driest winter in a generation in progress, talk is now starting to turn toward how the entire state is going to burn to the ground this summer…(In fact, there was a fire alert in a forrest near the big city earlier this month.)…It might…Snow levels are about a fifth of what they normally are, and a fraction of what they could be during those Snowmageddon winters, so it is going to be dry up here…And we live in a log cabin…Fabulous…And the forecast is more dry, too, so perhaps The Chariot won’t be blowing any snow at all this winter.

I think this was the last shift Travis and I will work together…He is going to swing shift, and one of the new guys, Dave, is coming to graveyard…We heard Travis isn’t too thrilled with this, so it’s funny he’s moving because you don’t move people who are happy on overnites because we’re hard to find…For some reason, we didn’t ask him about it, tho, and it’s entirely possible he agreed to the move when he was hired and found out how easy graveyards generally are…I mean, all Travis does is sit in the office and watch cartoons on his tablet…You can’t do that on swing shift, even if there’s nothing to do…You have to kill time other ways…But it appears to be a done deal, and he is stuck looking busy on swing shift now.

Workout Report
After one hell of a sleep (see Sleep Log below), forms were good, and so were weights and cardio, tho we didn’t have time for neck work, and shoulder therapy has been relegated to an “as needed” status…We did do a field test with the shoulder, and it should be noted it is still not a hundred percent…The test involved putting on a coat or dress shirt…We used to put jackets on left arm first, which meant reaching back with our right arm which mean a lot of pain…So we started putting them on right arm first, which significantly reduced discomfort and we would die of surprise if this also helped with recovery…Anyway, just for funsies, we tried putting our jacket on the old way and there was some discomfort…Not too much, but enuff so that we’ll keep doing shoulder therapy one or twice a week.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log
0830 Friday until 1730 Friday…9.0 hours for the day and 41.0 hours for the week.

This was a great sleep session (GSS)…We only got up once to use the can and we dreamt vividly…Some cold medicine helped, which we rationalized due to the fact we’ve been coughing up trace amounts of phlegm lately.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
