The Diary of a NobodyIt’s a very busy morning at the hotel for Sparrow, and The Wife makes a wonderfully tasty and healthy dinner. Today’s Diary.

Dinner tonight was a complete triumph…The Wife was busy while I slept, making a soup that had potatoes and rice and mushrooms and ground turkey meatballs that was first-rate…She combined what with a salad and baked salmon and it was the healthy dinner I’d requested when I got home this morning…She also cleaned the oven, commenting we were lucky there hadn’t been a grease fire.

In 1582 – Pope Gregory XIII issues a decree modifying the Julian calendar. The big change was moving the spring equinox to March 21 because the Julian calendar was not ten days out of step with the passing of the seasons, which was affecting when Easter was celebrated. Though Gregory’s proclamation had no effect beyond the Catholic Church, the Gregorian calendar is now the standard for reckoning the passing of the years in most of the world.

In 1980 – The United States defeats Finland 4-2 in the final game of the medal round at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, clinching the gold medal. Two days earlier Team USA had defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 in what is still regarded as one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

In 1962 – Gene Chandler is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of three weeks with Duke of Earl. The song originated from some vocal exercises Chandler and others in a vocal group he was in did before actually singing and the Earl refers to Earl Edwards, another member of the group. Chandler, who also had a successful career as a producer, would have three other Top 40 hits, but Duke of Earl remains his only Top 10 and #1 record as a performer.
