The Diary of a Nobody/October 24

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, October 24
I looked like a geek going to the gym this morning: workout shorts, winter boot covers, winter coat, watch cap with extra-cold liner, gloves…It was 17 out…Not only that, there’d been snow overnight and there was ice on the windows, too.

I wasn’t wearing matching socks, either…I’d slept in the socks I’d worn to the hotel and VSO Wednesday…One was brown and the other a sort of coblatish color with an orange stripe up top and yours truly couldn’t be bothered to change them…Same brand and they’re cotton and had they been black or white you would have thought they were top-quality athletic socks…But they weren’t white, they were cobaltish and brown and I probably looked like a kid who’d get thrown out of JV basketball tryouts on the first day.

The workout was good, tho hardly great…Recall I slept thru Tuesday’s workout and Sunday’s workout sucked hind t*t because of the paint fumes, so I hadn’t a max workout since Friday morning…You can’t go that long between good workouts and expect to move freshly upped weights six days later, so I didn’t even bother…Now, some body parts were strong…Bicep hammer curls were strong enuff to get 35lbs up twelve times, which isn’t too bad, so next time I’ll try 40lbs, tho I have never gotten 40 pounds up ten times with any regularity.

The Wife hired Maria the Maid for four hours of labor today, in keeping with her goal of doing this “quarterly, or whenever”…I’ve never really complained about how The Wife keeps house – Lord knows I can’t after the ratholes I passed off as bachelor pads and there’s really nothing to whine about anyway – but The Wife thought the cabin was a mess…In the general spirit of tidiness attending the day, I cleaned off my desk and picked the books off of the floor, making a mental note that we really could use another bookcase…The funny thing is The Wife worked right alongside Maria, so Maria only ended up working a bit less than three hours tho, of course, The Wife didn’t demand a refund for the final hour.

Ol’ Sparrow didn’t work right alongside anyone…The Wife realizes I have one day off between 60-hour work weeks that feature odd hours and irregular sleep times and she insisted I rest, so I spent most of the time lying on the couch reading or otherwise at leisure.

The big news in our small town is the restaurant on the end of town (heading towards the next county) is closing…Hardly a bulletin because over the years it’s been tuff to keep an operation going for any length of time…Since we’ve moved here in 2014 it’s been a BBQ joint, a Mexican place and now the breakfast/lunch place…Before that, when we lived in town, it was a steakhouse and then it was closed for a long time.

The problem I’ve always thought is, like some of the dumpy houses for sale here, is it has the curb appeal of a sanitation plant…There is not an entrance on Main Street, there’s one in the back and off to one side, the grass and landscaping are unattractive and the place always looks uninviting and, worst of all, it always looks closed…The food was good – not as good as the diner’s – tho the service was dead slow like the diner’s, too…So now we’re all going to starve here in our small town…The diner remains closed and now the restaurant is closing and now the only place left to eat is the bar where the service is casual and flippant and you have a 50/50 chance of getting a properly cooked meal.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1900 Wednesday until 0300 Thursday…8.0 hours for the night and a robust 31.5 hours for the week.

It wasn’t a great night’s sleep, tho, as I was up using the can every couple of hours and I actually got up at 0400, but subtracted an hour for the time it took me to get back to sleep.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
