The Diary of a Nobody/March 2

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, March 2
I got back from delivering folios at the hotel around 0100 and a drunk guest was standing in the lobby, apparently getting his bearings…I recognized him as being a drunk from last night and I asked him if I could be of service and he fished his room key out and said no and wandered off towards his room.

An hour or so later I get to wondering if he made it…Call it the instincts all the great ones have, if you must, so I wander the halls and find him on the second floor, more or less in front of 231…He’s on the floor, fast asleep and for some reason, he saw fit to take his snow boots off…You don’t really want to be in the way of flailing arms here, so I wake him up by kicking him on the bottom of the feet and this produced their usual results: an annoyed sleeper…But I’m not going to risk getting in the way, so you kick his feet because it’s unlikely even a drunk can lurch forward enuff from a dead sleep to take my legs out…You wouldn’t think it would take several minutes to get someone from the floor in front of his room actually inside his room, but it did…He was slow getting up and then he wanted to apologize and whatnot…Fortunately for all of us, his key worked in the lock of the room he wanted to go into, and I wished him sweet dreams.

I haven’t had any phone messages waiting for me the past few times in the Veterans Service Office (VSO)…Sometimes there are phone problems here, not too often, but they’ve happened, so I called the office on my mobile…Maybe I hit some buttons that transferred everything to Guam…I don’t think so…I mean, I’m getting calls when I’m in the office so it’s unlikely the phone goes on the fritz as soon as I leave, but I called anyway and voicemail picked up and I was later able to retrieve the message I left, so it was a satisfactory test.

Stanko dropped by about 1030 or so to talk about this and that…First, we talked about our Legion post’s summer baseball team…He said Kellen, the coach from last year, has a new job and won’t be able to offer head coaching services this year, tho he wants to help out where he can and even offered to lend a hand finding a new coach…Stanko also brought a letter he sent to other posts asking them to schedule games with us.

Baseball is a tuff go up here…There’s really only five playable a days a year which accounts for the fact baseball is the 27th most popular sport, right behind cribbage-snowboarding…We seldom have more than a dozen players which makes it tuff to field a team when you take into consideration family vacations and camps for other sports and whatnot.

Then we talked about the goings-on at the state Legion office…It turns out our current state commander Dean and the senior vice commander Greg are running for reelection…They even have a pic on Faceplant that looks like a goddamned action movie poster, replete with flames and crap…I asked Jim what the deal was and he said wasn’t entirely sure except it was unprecedented, adding some asked him to run for state commander at the mid-winter conference because nobody except Dean and Greg seem to be greeting this news with any degree of enthusiasm.

There are continuing problems with the VFW downtown, too…Recall it’s been closed since suffering smoke damage from a fire next door in November…Stanko said the woman who leases the bar is being a pain, calling the police and getting into fights with insurance companies and contractors and Stanko said they are probably going to kick her out.

I forgot to report I had a good workout Sunday…Recall I slept thru last Sunday’s workout, but I was up early enough to get a proper morning routine in and still be in the gym with plenty of time to get a full workout out in…The big news is I might be close to upping the weight on shoulder side lateral raises…Those are the ones where you have the dumbbell at your sides and you lift the weight straight up until your arm is a bit past parallel and on the final set I got 25 lbs up eleven times…If I can start getting it up eleven times consistently it will be time to up the weight.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1530 Monday until 2130 Monday…6.0 hours for the day and 12.5 hours for the week…A pretty good sleep, so good, in fact, I’m wondering if I’ll have trouble getting to sleep Tuesday morning and sleep right through workout.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
