The Diary of a Nobody/Wednesday, August 29

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, August 29
Had two walk-ins at Hotel B this morning, which is two more than I usually get in a month…The first came about 0100…He was a tall guy and he said he and his family were camping, tho his kid was teething and demanding a change of scenery…I was able to rustle up one those Pack-N-Play deals, which are sort of a combination of crib and playpen, which he was extremely grateful for.

There was no guarantee of this because I wasn’t altogether sure we had them…I was “pretty sure” we had them because most hotels do, but I’ve never had a request for one and I’d never bothered to find out on my own, tho it is something I really should know…As it was, they were up in the 2nd-floor utility closet, stuffed in the back behind both a rollaway bed and some mattress pads.

The second were a couple of hunters dressed like shrubbery who wandered in at 0230…Really, their outfits were so realistic if they were standing still you’d be tempted to water them…Fortunately, we’re pretty slow and there were plenty of rooms available, tho I wasn’t in the mood to slash rates, charging everyone what the system was asking for $109, plus tax…Actually, mere clerks like me aren’t able to adjust rates anymore…You have to have special powers for this and I don’t have them, tho if push comes to shove I can make an adjustment on their folio.

The printers at the front desk still aren’t working, so I printed off the housekeeping and emergency reports and the day’s registration cards on the printer at the business center in the lobby…It is not the latest model printer, either, taking upwards of one minute to produce a single page…It’s not one of those dot matrix deals from the earliest days of printing, but it’s the next step up.

I don’t really want to appear on camera with a gaping hole in my teeth, so Jay, the social media coordinator for Sparrow For Congress did a Faceplant Live video tonight from a script I wrote…We put it on the campaign’s InstaGram account, too, and it is getting more action than my videos do, frankly, so we will keep trotting him out, including another one on Thursday.

No retailer today, so I took the opportunity to go to the next country for lunch at the Mexican joint…Despite the fact it had been several weeks since I’d favored them with an appearance, Wednesday afternoon is my usual time for dining there and the cook read off my usual for me like he had seen me yesterday and if you don’t think that is 5-star service you’ve got another thing coming.

I was grateful not to have the retailer today…As I whined about last week, doing four hours Tuesday night at the retailer, the usual graveyard shift at the hotel then a full day back at the retailer was getting to be more labor than I want to put in, especially since it has become damn near impossible to get some winks in at the hotel lately

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Wednesday until 1230 Wednesday…Mirabile dictu!!!!…Sleep on Wednesday!!!…Regular readers of this crap know how rare this is, but there was no shift at the retailer today so I got a nap in so I could enjoy an afternoon off…The nappy-poo, by the by, brings the weekly total to 25 hours.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
