The Diary of a Nobody/April 5

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, April 5
It’s hardly a bulletin that we’re doing better business the first days this month than we did in April last year, but the big news is we’re doing even better than the first few days of April 2019…We are at 29K right now for this month and we were at 7K this time last year and at 19K two Aprils ago.

For the second straight night, the left front desk cash drawer was 75 cents over…I let it go last night because yours truly tends to let loose change overages stay in there just for funsies, but there’s no reason to let it go two nights in a row…There is really no sense in dropping loose change in the cash safe, tho, so you take it and put it in a drawer in the back office in case somebody is short a few cents one day and needs it.

Right after reporting for duty three ladies and two guys came in…The ladies turned out to be flight attendants with a two-day layover and the guys – one of whom I recognized as the reputed local drug dealer – had bought them dinner…The guys clearly would not have dismissed out of hand an invitation up, but none was forthcoming and after they left the gals stopped by the front desk wondering what they should do Monday on their day off in town…All, apparently, were making their first visit here.

Well, my idea of fun would be to go to the library, but no one wants to hear that and yours truly was spared from playing tour guide when one gal asked about going to the mountain and could they get a pass to the top even if they aren’t skiing.

Of course they can…There are restaurants and some shops up there and the view is wonderful and there would be worse ways to spend their time and they were rather enthused about that plan and they thanked me for it, even though I had little to do with it except to help push it along.

The second COVID shot is scheduled for Thursday at the VA south of here…Recall last month the first shot was combined with a trip down there for Veteran Service Officer (VSO) training and I spent two nights there, Wednesday and Thursday and on my own dime, too, because the county wasn’t paying for travel because they don’t want us to get COVID and die…Well, I don’t really need to spend two nights down there this time, or even one night, really, for a 15-minutes appointment but on the other hand, yours truly doesn’t really want to drive down and back Thursday.

I have some zero clue why not…I mean, I enjoy driving and, of course, there’s the road trip later this month…We’ll see…I could knock off the VSO early Wednesday and head down just for funsies and go to that nice restaurant again, but who knows…It could be a game time decision.

It will be nice to be vaccinated, tho…I live and work virtually alone and there’s no real reason to think I will get COVID, but it could be useful to have a vaccination record one day, especially because I still intend on taking the cruise that was canceled.

I’ve been cutting down somewhat on the amount of vegetables eaten lately…Recall yours truly’s been eating his usual sack of peas and then, later, the bell pepper/celery/broccoli assemblage but I haven’t been finishing all of it lately which is bad because you get home and BOOM, you’re throwing food away…That’s wrong…I mean, it’s not much, maybe a couple-three bites and I should probably just shove them down my throat like I do sandwiches and fast food stuff because there are hungry people who would love some veggies and they should not be thrown out.

Tammy brought her dog Whiskey (for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, phonetic alphabet for What The F*ck) in this morning and she is still an exuberant puppy who, for some reason, is always inordinately glad to see her pal ol’ Sparrow…So glad to see me she leaped up at me and her nose landed one right in the cubes…Ouch…Not a direct shot, but enuff so that the reaction – bending over and yelping – was entirely instinctive and funny, because Tammy laffed.

It’s a kennel at the front desk now, with graveyard apparently the only shift where there isn’t a canine presence, a fact that is starting to be noticed by more and more guests…Recall there are no less than two beds against the wall at the front desk and there is usually a dog at the front desk – Tammy’s Whiskey, Maintenance Guy Luke’s Zia or Front Desk Manager Brandon’s Mia – when you’re checking in or checking out and guests who are leaving really early will wonder why there isn’t one on duty when I’m there…Well, I can hardly say dogs generally hate me and that feeling is returned, so I wave it off and say the graveyard dog has the night off or something similar.

Amy mentioned tonight that Zia’s doggy bed – appropriated at need by Whiskey and Mia – really needs cleaning and threatened to take it home and do it herself…I noticed it needed cleaning, too,  – a sign it really needs one – but I mentioned to Amy we could probably just throw it in one of the big washers in the laundry room and she nodded and said she would try to do that this week.

I was up early (see Sleep Log below) and tried out some new coffee I’d bought at the store earlier this week…For reasons that still aren’t entirely clear, I was in the mood for something other than a donut shop knock-off and rolled with a medium roast deal that is bolder than the light-roast donut shop stuff and is pretty good…I also took advantage of the extra time and got some laundry done…We’ll see, tho, if the early wake-up time affects workout tomorrow.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1330 Monday until 1930 Monday…7.0 hours for the day and 14.5 for the week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
