The Diary of a Nobody/January 25

Friends, Read Free Fortnight has been extended.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, January 25
Let me tell you something, ol’ Sparrow breathed a sigh of relief when he reported for duty and Amy said the back office computer was working normally. Recall it froze on me last night and never would start back up and while I was hardly at BigHooters dot com when it happened, you never know what a computer or Mr Internet are thinking and I was relieved it was back to normal.

Amy had some pizza for me, too, two slices…The only fly in the ointment was it wouldn’t be a Sparrow nominee for Pizza of the Year…It had some spinach or some other green stuff, on it and it also had bison meat…Now, you run into bison meat from time to time up here – usually in burgers, where it’s pretty good – but it’s not as good in pizza as, say, Italian sausage…Or bacon…Or pepperoni…It was a white, pizza, tho, which I otherwise like and it didn’t cost me anything, tho there is going to come a time when I’m going to toss in a few bucks to the Amy General Fund because she has pizza pretty regularly for me.

Continuing a recent trend, Amy’s drawer was spot on, but the left drawer, I think used by Brandon, had over $1,300 in it, an awful lot of money to leave in the drawer…I appreciate the trust, but boy, that is a lot of cash to leave for someone else…I did some checking, more out of curiosity than anything, and 227 came down and paid cash for his room.

The big news is Assistant Front Desk Manager Q has been exposed to COVID…I am not making that up…Apparently one of his several roommates came down with it, some chick who works somewhere or other, and he’s been ordered not to come to work until it’s been established he’s not sick…If he had it the last time I saw him I should be OK…We had masks on and never got close.

Back to being pleasingly slow tonight…For the past couple of nights the nite audit hasn’t completed until well after 0200 but tonight the final folio was delivered at 0030…There was a brief worry about 0415 when the phone rang and for some reason, yours truly was in the mood to fret about it for a split second before picking up the phone because it could be – horror of horrors – something that might actually require me to work…My worst fear is a clogged toilet because those are gross, but I might also be asked to make a reservation or some other such nonsense…As usual, tho, it was nothing, merely a gent who wanted to know when morning coffee service (“that coffee in the thermoses”) would be ready…As it was, the second pot was finishing brewing and I told him he was in luck, it would be out in less than ten minutes, a full half-hour earlier than usual.

I wasn’t as busy as expected at the Veterans Service Office (VSO) today…There were a couple of things on the docket: arranging to get the DD-214 for Ms W’s father and sign Mr A up for VA medical care…Neither happened.

First, there was a message from Ms W advising the missing discharge papers had been found…I had told her to see if an aunt or other family member might have a box of her dad’s stuff and sure enuff, that’s what happened…Not only was the discharge form in there, but so were Dad’s dog tags, his awards and some other stuff.

The second task was signing Mr A up for VA medical care…He lives a bit south of town and runs a drilling service, he’s about my age and he mailed me his DD-214…Unfortunately, he is not eligible for VA medical care…He was in the national guard and guardsmen are only eligible for VA medical care if they were called up on federal orders and served for the entire call-up…It doesn’t matter what the call-up is for, either, or for how long…It could be combat or flood control and time spent training does not count…Mr A’s DD-214 is for his boot camp period which, unfortunately, doesn’t count for this.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1430 Monday until 2100 Monday…7.0 hours for the day and 12.5 hours for the week…It was a great sleep, too, with yours truly waking up a full half-hour before the alarm, feeling great and ready to…That didn’t stop yours truly from staying in bed until the alarm went off just for funsies, tho.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
