The Diary of a Nobody/October 2

Yes, it is Read Free Sunday at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 2
There were a couple of people in the lobby when I reported for duty, sitting at one of the tables in the back corner, near the fireplace…They were a man and a woman and it was plain – based on both their body language and what I was able to overhear – they were having a heart-to-heart talk…

You could hear them at the front desk, too, with the woman noting something or another was a “sh*t show” and later adding “…if you are going to turn it around on me…” but you got the impression they weren’t married because the neither was defensive or contradicting the other…They did have a familiarity, tho, and yours truly was left with the impression they were siblings…They were there for a while, too, not retiring until after half-past midnite, while yours truly was out front doing the billing…The woman thanked me and I joked that the Lobby Chair Fee would be added to her bill, hardly a Line of the Year candidate, but it got a pretty good chuckle anyway.

About 30 minutes into the shift a guy wearing khakis and a sweater saunters into the lobby and yours truly asks if he can be of service…He said no, he was just “meandering” which was funny because I know a guy on the prowl when I see one and it was plain the prospect of some nookie would not have been dismissed out of hand…Unfortunately, the bar was closed and the only people to scam on in the lobby were yours truly and the couple in the corner chatting and fortunately we were dismissed out of hand…He then regarded the sundry stand without enthusiasm before wandering out the front door to see if there were any chicks in the parking lot looking to put out, which was actually pretty funny.

The big news is the sheath for the knife is in and it got its first use tonight and I gotta tell you, it’s quality gear, which is hardly a bulletin because it’s from the same company as the knife, which itself is first-class – perhaps even world-class – gear, tho I am hardly Mr Knife.

And it was exciting – tho hardly surprising – to find out the sheath can fit on the belt both horizontally and vertically…I am not making that up…At first, it was looped thru vertically because that’s how the knife clipped onto the belt, but then yours truly thought screw that, and looped it thru horizontally, with the open end facing the center of my back, which made it easier to open the Velcro tab than having it face the other way.

It got good use today, too, as both the French vanilla and half & half creamer boxes needed to be replaced…Now, regular readers of this crap know these two flavors were locked in a pitched battle in the latest creamer usage test (CUT) and the big news is half & half won this CUT…Not by a wide margin – it was pretty close – but as the official in charge (OIC) of the CUT, it was plain there were fewer half & halfs remaining than there were French vanillas…Hazelnut must evidently taste like bleach because it was a distant third…So half & half and French vanilla have split the first two CUTs and it should be exciting winter of CUTs in the back coffee room.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1030 Saturday until 1830 Saturday…8.0 hours for the day and 50.0 hours for the week, a wonderful start to the sleep month.

Per policy, the cat came in and hopped up on the bed the instant Daddy started stirring but she didn’t sit on my back because the covers weren’t exactly to her taste – she prefers them completely covering me, and I do, too, so she doesn’t get her claws in me – so she hopped off and scurried into the other room…Of course, the covers were adjusted forthwith and the cat knows when this happens and she returned to hop on my back in short order.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

———

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
