The Diary of a Nobody/December 1

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, December 1
All righty, the final day of vacation…Recall, we traveled Wednesday so we were home and in prime position for our usual Thursday day off – preferably being done for the day and in the chair reading by mid-morning – but we had things to do, in fact, we only got one-third of the troika in at the gym.

We are pleased to report we had a solid Welcome Back Workout (WBW)…You do these when you’ve been away from the gym because there is no reason to do max weights right off and the standard WBW is to do, more or less, three-quarters of your usual weight…This lets your muscles know you’re getting back it and after your WBW you can resume your regular weights…As I recall the trainer who taught me the WBW technique said you use it after two weeks away, but we were in our 30s then and we’re in our 50s now and we’ve adapted accordingly.

Regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall that a couple of weeks ago while in the next county we stopped into the dealer we bought the new ride from to get an oil change and it turned the oil reservoir (or whatever its called) was leaking, which wasn’t the Upset of the Year because the oil lite had come on…Our appointment to get it repaired was today at 0900 and John had said it would the entire morning to fix, not including lunch for the guys, so ol’ Sparrow was planning on being out of there around 1300 or so, tho it actually took a bit longer than that.

We prepared accordingly…The first stage of Operation Kill Time (OKT) was to walk to our fave Mexican joint for a meal…It’s right down the highway but it’s winter now so you had to be careful because there’s ice out there now and the last thing anyone needs is for ol’ Sparrow to test the ER at the local hospital (which is highly regarded) with a broken hip… There was a World Cup game on the TV – Croatia/Belgium, the winner advances, Croatia advances with a tie – and it was a thrilling 0-0 tie late in the game you didn’t have to be Pele to know Belgium was squandering chance after chance to score…We have no idea why we stayed and watched, tho it should be noted watching boring World Cup soccer fit right into OKT.

(It should be noted, however, that ol’ Sparrow and his late brother actually paid money to go to a World Cup match at the Rose Bowl ages ago…The US played Romania and the whole day was a fiasco…Not only did we have to sit thru an infernal soccer game – which, I suppose, is to be expected when you buy a ticket to a World Cup match – but the US lost 1-0 (probably also to be expected) and you’re jammed like sardines into the Rose Bowl and its parking lot and it took 20 minutes just to reach the tunnel and it took forever to get out.)

We also had a job interview today and that did not go well at all…I don’t know if I misread the ad or what, but what I thought was an interview for a full-time, year-round nite auditor was actually a chat for a seasonal swing shift front desk clerk…Crap, I don’t want that…Still tho, the hotel still has my job posted on the job board so we are going to keep our options open.

After the interview we did blow $66.27 at the retailer in town…Christ, things add up…We did need a couple of supplements and the big news is frozen spinach was back in stock and as a specific against them running out again we selfishly took more than we really needed…Still tho, frozen spinach is a dollar-six a sack and we had to consult the receipt to find out why we spent so much and we did stock up on some things: trash bags, a two-pack of deodorant, plus aluminum foil which evidently is gold-plated now because, Jesus H, that was a lot, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1700 Wednesday until 0130 Thursday…8.5 hours for the nite and 39.5 hours for the week, one hell of a Thursday total (ThT).

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
