The Diary of a Nobody/October 1

It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 1
It was End of the Month tonite and, as noted last week, the revenue numbers for the month were strong, with Assistant Front Desk Manager Q noting business is strong next month, too, and that already we’re not too far away from October’s goal…I asked if this was due to improper revenue forecasting by front desk management and Q was noncommittal, merely noting that nite auditors have no clue the pressures front desk managers go thru, adding that the very best nite auditors know when to keep their yaps shut, which was pretty funny.

Business stayed strong and the end-of-month figures were still very good…Room revenue ended up being $130K more than last September on 300 more rooms rented and the Average Daily Rate (ADR; room revenue divided by number of rooms rented) for the month was $171 compared to $146, which means guests were really taking it in the shorts.

Managers get a monthly allowance for the restaurant that we write off at the end of every month…It’s one hundred bucks for most – not that much, if you ask me – and anything over $100 is carried over to the following month and almost interesting are the habits you see The Exalted Ones getting into…Scott the Owner can do whatever the hell he wants, of course, but he’s been working from home for a while now and his totals have dropped…GM Andy gets a more generous allowance that he’s always under and AGM Candace is spot on $100 every month, to the penny…I am not making that up and have some zero clue how she does that…Q – plainly under her influence – has been coming in right at a hundred bucks, too, but this month he was actually over by a few bucks…Head Housekeeper Gloria and Maintenance Guy Luke were both over by a couple of hundred bucks, very rare for Gloria but not all that newsworthy for Luke, while Front Desk Manager Brandon – the heir to the estate – was his usual $400 or so over.

We finally got around to asking about how to make the new credit card readers accept the chip instead of making people slide it…It’s really not that big a deal – I mean, the card gets read either way – but it is the third decade of the 21st century and people really should be able to use their chip or wave it in front of the reader.

The problem was when we rang something up in The System swiping was the only option, so we asked Q what the deal was and he said instead of tapping the type of credit card and then hitting the credit card button, you bypass the credit card button entirely and tap Enter after hitting the credit card type…I got to try this a few times tonite and we are pleased to report it worked, however, it is awfully slow, the reader telling the guest to remove his card several seconds before approval shows up on my screen, tho it turns out it does say approved on the reader.

We’ve been getting some good rain, lately and the lawn, while largely dormant now, needs a mowing…Plus the leaves are starting to fall, too…That fertilizer company we bought some stuff from recommends we mulch the leaves back into the ground and because that is easier than raking them up – not to mention cheaper than paying someone to pick them up – it’s advice we are completely on board with and, right now, as it stands, moving forward, it’s looking like Lawn Care Thursday (LCT) could be a thing this week.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1230 Sunday until 2130 Sunday…9.0 hours for the week 52.5 hours for the week, and I know all you are as thrilled with the return to the 50-hour sleep week as we are.

We had another Navy dream today, too…These are hardly unusual, but this was the second one in a week, which is…This time we were in boot camp tho, of course, it didn’t resemble any boot any American serviceperson has ever gone thru…We all had our own rooms and chow was in a rather nice dining room with wait service.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
