The Diary of a Nobody/July 29

Sure, why not: Read Free Sunday for all at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, July 29
Boy, we were moving slowly at the hotel this morning…This was to be expected, of course, after being a rascal and having dinner at the fancy French joint (FFJ) Friday nite which, of course, obliged us to miss the traditional Friday nap (FN), preparatory to coming in.

Fortunately, we weren’t that busy…We were sold out – for the fifth nite in a row – but we weren’t bothered too much, which is good because we were moving at half-speed all nite…If fact, we even caught ourselves dozing off occasionally and we weren’t back from walking the hotel until 0130, a full 30 minutes longer than it should have taken.

It was downright cold at the front desk when we reported for duty, too, with the thermostat reading 63 degrees, a good temperature for storing meat but, boy, pretty chilly for greeting guests and otherwise working a front desk and we promptly changed it 67, which itself is cooler than management likes it.

That balloon rodeo is in town again…That’s the deal where you spend a thousand dollars to bring your family up here for the weekend to watch lots of hot air balloons flying around on Saturday and Sunday…And you can’t even ride in them, either, nor can you go and watch them launch at the nearby lake…You are graciously allowed to stand in a parking lot or wander streets in an unfamiliar town looking for a proper vantage point.

Long-time readers of this crap know we’ve never seen the point of this, altho it should be noted balloons are a regular sight up here and they may not be elsewhere…Now, if they raced and the losers got their heads shaved – or better yet, thrown out of their balloon – or there was a demolition derby at 500 feet then, sure, let’s go…We might even pay for the privilege…They were up early for it, too, starting to muster in the lobby around 0600 and you can bet morning coffee service (MCS) was prepared, with all available pots standing by ready for duty…They were needed, too, because evidently a tuff morning of balloon-watching calls for full caffeination and we were moving more coffee than a donut shop.

The big news is AGM Brandon has a sign above his door heralding his new position…And above the door means above the door, too: you actually have to look up to see it…We are not making that up…But there was no room on either side of the door for it…On the right, you’ve got the back office coffee room and on the left is the time clock and the rack where servers put their day’s receipts…So it went above the door where it’s not centered because there’s an a/c vent in the way.

We’re never too far away from cooler weather here and if you know where to look you can already notice the colors starting to change, which regular readers of this crap know is more or less right on schedule….We know where to look, too: on the straightaway before you enter the canyon…(Heading home…If you’re heading into town it’s as you come out of the canyon.)…The river runs nearby and you do not have to be Mr Audobon to strongly suspect this affects things and the first yellow leaves are starting to appear…This will continue thru fall.

No workout today, but we’re OK with that because, short of rest, we caught up on our sleep (big time, too, see Sleep Log below)…In fact, we had so much sleep (see Sleep Log below) that the prospect of a Sunday morning workout is not, right now, being dismissed out of hand…Plus the lawn could use a mowing, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Saturday until 2020 Saturday…12.0 hours for the day – the strongest possible finale – and 44.18 hours for the week, a good finish to a subpar sleep week.

No one should be surprised at this, of course, because when we went down this morning we’d been up for 31 hours (our PB is 47 strait) or so and the only real question was whether we’d sleep strait thru till the alarm at 2130…As far as we can remember we only woke up once to use the can – about as good a 12-hour total as you can expect at our age.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
