The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Not In My Small Town – Not Song of the Year, but an OK country song further proof that Americans can come together to bicker about anything…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters have both listened to the song and read the lyrics and remain “pretty sure” they will never see what the big deal is.

2. NCAA Sports Congress preparing legislation to get involved in NCAA’s NIL imbroglio with law seemingly written in NCAA boardroom that would, among other things, prevent athletes from receiving any money they generate for member schools…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strongly suspect” the government should butt out of this and let the NCAA sort this out for themselves.

3. Mass Shootings – The 3-hole staple…Summer lull continues, as there were only 18 mass shootings – defined as shootings with four (4) or injures/deaths – in US this week, with twelve (12) deaths and 63 injuries in 18 shootings…As usual, America deafly silent on matter, preferring status quo to actually doing anything about it.

4. International Swimming International governing body to start new Open category for trans swimmers at international meets, meaning girls can once again resume competing against girls, instead of being obliged to swim against some born as boys…This is a reasonable and logical solution, so don’t be surprised when it doesn’t catch on.

5. Domingo German New York Yankees pitcher 0-2 with 6.27 ERA since throwing 24th major league perfect game on June 28 vs Oakland, though petition to have it considered minor league perfect game due to quality of competition reportedly being considered by MLB.

Due to time constraints, these items have run before.

In 1618 – The first legislature in the Colonies meets, when the Virginia General Assembly holds its first meeting in Jamestown. It was a single body made up of Governor Sir George Yeardley, his four councilors, and 22 burgesses elected by free, white males.  In addition to legislative duties attending to the needs of free white males, the body served judiciary functions, as well. The body became bicameral in 1642 and retains the same name today. The first session lasted until Aug 4 and the group met in the choir area and chancel of the Jamestown church.

In 1930 – Uruguay wins soccer’s first World Cup, defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final match in Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital. Argentina led 2-1 at halftime, but Uruguay tied it at the 57-minute mark and took the lead eleven minutes later before adding the final goal in the last minute. It remains the only time Uruguay has hosted the tournament and was their first of two titles (1950). The game was a rematch of the 1928 Olympic final, also won by Uruguay.

In 1977 – Fleetwood Mac is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the twelfth of 31 non-consecutive weeks with Rumours. The album produced four chart singles, including the #1 hit Dreams, was Billboard’s biggest album of 1977 and its third-biggest of 1978. The album has made Billboard’s year-end charts several times since including each of the last six years and its worldwide sales are estimated at 40 million copies.
