The Diary of a Nobody/June 17

Sure, why not…Read Free Sunday (RFS) is a thing today.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, June 17
It was a busy first hour or so at the hotel, with four walk-ins, including two right off the bat…The first appeared to a Mexican family, with the senora asking for the new girl Gina – who speaks Spanish – and when yours truly advises she isn’t here anymore she asks where she is…Well, I can’t divulge that, of course, so we offer to be of service and she says Gina said she had a room at the Friends and Family rate, tho it isn’t for her, but for a senor standing behind her…She explains the senor does not speak English at all.

This can be tricky…There’s no reason not to believe her – especially because Gina speaks fluent Spanish – but there’s no reason to start throwing discounts around indiscriminately, either…So we ask what kind of rate Gina might have quoted and the woman says “two-twenty something” and hilarity is averted because that was more or less what The System was asking for a room tonite, so evidently Gina got sly and hardly gave a discount at all tho, in classic front desk fashion (FDF), she made it seem like it was.

What was moderately funny was the senor seemed to understand what I was saying all along and appeared to have some modest Ingles and with that and my trusty Spanglish, we probably could’ve dispensed with the intermediary.

Later, a Jamaican lady came in looking for a room and she didn’t like the $225 rate at all…She said, with a wave of a hand, that that was too much and we actually agreed with her, because there was no point in pretending it was a bargain and she was looking at me with a gaze that strongly suggested the only appropriate move on my part was to slash the rate immediately, if not sooner…She was probably just cheap and, of course, a raw display of my Nite Auditor Authority could’ve taken some serious dough off, but a breezy, snotty attitude isn’t the best card to be played here, so we lied thru our teeth and said there wasn’t anything we could do about the rate.

One guest paid cash for the first nite of their stay…(The other nite was on their debit card; evidently, there wasn’t enuff on it for both nites.)…This isn’t particularly news – even by our dull standards – except for the fact it was a pain in the neck to drop $250.66…He paid with three C notes and most of his change was in fives, because that was what was in the drawer and when it came time to drop $250.66 there weren’t $50 in twenties, tens, or fives…There were, however, 68 ones, so we went to the safe – which, fortunately, we now know how to open – and exchanged 50 of them for ten fivers, a fair trade.

We checked in on the Portfolio for the first in quite a while today, just for funsies, to see what the latest was and the big news is it’s up a lot…Evidently, those headlines I saw about a bear market were true because the Portfolio is showing a 15% gain from our initial investment and Friday’s close was down a few bucks from an all-time high earlier in the week…We’ve got some cash set aside for some project work ideas, but that may or may not be spent and it might be time to put some of it in there OR start putting the alimony we stop paying later this summer in there because we’re doing OK without putting the alimony money in Household Accounts.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Saturday until 1830 Saturday…9.5 hours for the day and 54.5 hours for the week, a full 30 minutes better than last week’s triumphant total…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
