The Diary of a Nobody/June 3

Of course, it’s Read Free Sunday at The Diary. Enjoy today’s entry with Sparrow’s compliments.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, June 3
Boy, it was slow tonite, both in terms of business and the alacrity with which ol’ Sparrow went about his nite’s labors…Not only was their more than the usual Sparrow Dawdling (SD), but there was some admin stuff to take care of, which took ol’ genius here 45 minutes or so to complete.

What happened was Chris, going places here at the hotel that fired his brother, promulgated a new nite audit checklist and it was only because of our wholesale professionalism and thoroughness that we noted there were changes to email distribution lists for our nightly reports…This took longer than it needed to because instead of merely deleting the old distribution lists and making new ones, we edited the existing lists, which meant comparing the old contacts with the new ones and that wasted time, tho we didn’t realize this until it was too late.

Also confounding matters was the fact some of the addresses weren’t accurate because after we sent the reports out there were notices that two were undeliverable…So emailed AGM Brandon and Chris, included the faulty addresses, and requested clarification…This led to the big news of the nite: Chris monitors his hotel email at home!!!…I am not making that up!!!

Less than two minutes after I sent the email there was the sound consistent with an incoming missive and BOOM, it was a response from Chris…This is why he going places in the lodging racket: home monitoring of hotel email on his nite off…Now, it wasn’t a surprise he was up – regular readers of this crap know we’re up then on our nites off – and hotel email is accessible via a browser, but you would think he would have better things to do.

At about 0645 a friendly sort comes to checkout and we issue his receipt and he walks out but soon comes back in and is in my face, announcing we got a problem because it seems some wizard here at the front desk billed him for two nites when he had already paid for the first nite, probably because the initial reservation was for one nite and he extended, tho substantive research into the matter wasn’t conducted.

Anyway, I make a “give me” motion with a hand and he forks over his folio and he’s right, he was billed for two nights: once last nite and once tonite, something consistent with an extended stay…The problem was he was only looking at the bottom of the folio, where it showed the total amount billed for both nites…We pointed out the seperate transactions and resisted the urge to smack him.

He handled it perfectly: he made some self-deprecating remarks about his stupidity and apologized and friends, this is the proper way to handle something like this because we have long memories and we’d hate to hold this against you on some future stay…But a heartfelt apology means this little incident is dismissed without prejudice and he was returned immediately to ol’ Sparrow’s good graces.

There was good, but neither +1 nor 8-rep strength in the gym tonite…Recall the past few workouts have been very strong – with 8 reps being failure – and we felt it when we woke up tonite (see Sleep Log below)…We weren’t sore and we had just woken up so our muscles weren’t tired, but they were something and far from ready for a regular workout.

Well, if you’re not sore, there’s no reason not to get into the gym…HOWEVER, you do not do regular weights, +1 weights, and certainly not 8-rep weights because this is how you overdo it and get hurt…You tone it down and we’ve learned over the years this is what your body is really craving.

It certainly was tonite…We did what was basically the Welcome Back Workout (WBW) you do after some time off and felt great the whole way…Most sets were ten reps failure on the last set, tho a couple were eleven or twelve, which for workouts like this is more than OK…We felt great almost immediately afterward.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Saturday to 1830 Saturday…10.0 hours for the day and an even-Steven 50.0 hours for the week, a strong finish after a sluggish start to the Sleep Week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
