The Diary of a Nobody/March 4

Indeed, it’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, March 4
There was an email from AGM Candace when we reported for duty at the hotel tonite detailing a new nite auditor duty…Boo for new duties, of course, but yay because it’s not all that hard.

It’s called the Tex Exempt Audit, and all it really entails is generating the folios of everyone in-house who are exempt from some or all of the assorted taxes we collect…Candace is very thorough and her instructions were easy to follow and accurate, never a given in the workplace, and once we get it down it really shouldn’t take more than ten minutes or so, but when you have a job in no small measure because of the lack of work involved, you tend to whine about new duties.

No one mentioned GM Andy not being retained – recall Madam Public Health Director shared this tidbit Friday during our week hot tub session (HTS) – and his email appears to still be active because he gets the nite audit reports we send out every nite and none of them were returned…We went to see if his name was still on his office and when it wasn’t we realized it never had been anyway…Then we thought maybe he has a contract and instead of being fired maybe he was told it wasn’t going to be renewed and it occurred to us no one at the hotel may know yet and Tammy certainly didn’t mention it when she relieved me.

The big news is the experiment of having us log our cash drops appears to be over, tho the only sign of that is the complete absence of forms to log them in on…Lord knows there wasn’t any communication in the matter, which is in keeping with apparent, ling-standing hotel standard hotel policy.

Ol’ Sparrow – Mr Customer Service – has never been particularly quick in recognizing either crank calls or homosexual advances over the years, and he had both tonite in one exciting call…We’d just returned from walking the hotel and we still have the front desk mobile (FDM) with us and it rings and it was a guy who says he’s in 303 and is having problems…This should’ve been a sign right there because we don’t have a 303 and it’s rare – tho hardly unprecedented – when a guest screws up his room number…Rather seriously we advise him we don’t have a 303 and ask his last name so we can look it up, and he hems and haws a little bit – another sign – before advising us there is a problem with his bed…It has a puddle in the middle and he is lying in it.

After some more blabbing, he says he’ll wait until morning and rather densely we say OK, good, because that’s when Housekeeping and Maintenance will be in, ready to get to the bottom of this…He then announces he is going to sleep and will spend all nite dreaming of me I am not making that up…This is gross, tho I say very well, sir, and hang up…We never did get a room number – in no small measure because he’s not staying here – and we forget about it…He calls back tho, a few minutes later and ol’ Sparrow’s on his toes this time, dammit, and tells him we had just talked and he uses the name of the human form of the Christian triumvirate in a manner inconsistent with praise and says to someone else that we’d already called this one.

The big news is that while preparing morning coffee service (MCS) we actually brewed the hot water first, instead of a pot of coffee…I am not making that up…What happened was a water pot was closest by and there wasn’t a filter in the thingy, so it was a simple matter to stick the water pot in there and get it going…But this is the first time we’ve done this in four years here…Now, we’re not completely rigid; we’ll brew French roast first sometimes, while other times European blend is first up, but this is the first time water had batted leadoff…The reason we never lead off with hot water is because if we’re running a tad behind schedule we can take two pots of coffee out and get MCS setup going while the hot water pot is filling up…Today, tho, there was plenty of time and the hot water pot was right there and there was no reason to break precedent.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1600 Saturday until 2130 Saturday…5.5 hours for the day – a dismal total – and 46.0 hours for the week – another loser total.

We have some zero clue what happened…We were as tired as we usually are on Saturday morning but when we turned in BOOM nothing…We weren’t even yawning for reason…So we got up and did some reading – a lot of reading, actually – and listened to some stuff before exhaustion finally set in.

Of course, this eliminated the possibility of a Saturday nite or Sunday morning workout, but a Sunday nite workout is certainly in play…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
