Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1781 – German-British astronomer William Herschel discovers the planet Uranus. Herschel first thought he had discovered a comet, though soon enough it was known to be a planet. Originally known as the Georgian star after King George III, Uranus was the first new planetary discovery since Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn in the centuries before Christ.

In 1960 – The Chicago Cardinals of the NFL announce they are moving to St Louis for the coming season. The Cardinals had had only one winning season in the 1950s and were losing fans to the Chicago Bears. The Cardinals were founded in 1898 on Chicago’s South Side, became charter members of the NFL in 1920, and moved to Phoenix in 1988.

In 1976 – Johnny Taylor is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of six consecutive weeks with Disco Lady. The song later spent four weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 – the first Hot 100 #1 to have the word “disco” in the title. It was the fourth and final #1 soul song for Taylor, remains his only #1 pop hit, and was Billboard’s 3rd-biggest pop song of the year.
