The Diary of a Nobody/January 6

Sure, it’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, January 6
There was some big news when we reported for duty at the hotel tonite.

First, we were sold out for the first time since summer…I am not making that up and the Assistant Front Desk Manager (AFDM) reckoned our sold-out bonus (SOB) at $62, not too bad…We’re sold out for the next few nights, too, what with that infernal music festival that draws a whole heap o’ Texans in for five exciting nites of drinking, mayhem, and under-tipping in town.

And not only were we sold out, the AFDM was delighted to report all arrivals were in-house…Well, all that were going to make it in tonite…There were a couple of arrivals that would not be here until Saturday morning after Tammy got here.

We were working all nite…We didn’t get back from walking the hotel until 0130 – which actually isn’t too bad a time, considering it’s a sold-out nite in ski season – and then we ate and then project work wasn’t done until around 0300 and then we started in on processing registration cards for the day’s arrivals and holy living f*ck there are 84 rooms arriving today, a Sparrow PB.

In the past this would’ve been no problem-o because 62 of them were part of a group and we would’ve only been obliged to print their registration cards and clip them together…Now, tho, restaurant discount coupons have to be made for every arrival and writing out 82 of them took a demoralizingly long amount of time…And because we are sold out tonite and are already sold out Saturday nite, there are also 82 departures and all in all billing wasn’t done until 0600, the latest time ever…Thank goodness for the knife…It was a hero tonite, what with two creamer boxes and fresh box of French roast coffee packets needing to be opened.

There was more good strength in the gym tonite…Following a nice rest (see Sleep Log below) we woke up feeling great and are pleased to report we moved the same max weights as last time…The big news is the entire gym was chilly…Power to the entire facility had been cut off all day for construction reasons (no, we don’t know what they are) and didn’t come back on until 1700 or so and the high today was 10°F so it can hardly be considered the Upset of the Year the gym wasn’t fully heated.

The gym was pretty busy, too – all guys, certainly no Mystery Girl (MG) – and while this usually isn’t a problem, one oaf went to use the Smith machine and another loser the pec deck right as we were ready to do chest work…Crap…We end up doing dumbbell presses lying on a bench…For only one set, tho, because the kid on the Smith machine was done in short order.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Saturday until 1830 Saturday, 9.0 hours for the day and 49.5 hours for the week, just a tad shy of our preferred 50-hour total, but otherwise not too bad.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
