Here We Go
What a pleasant nite it was at the hotel…Occupancy was nice and low – about a third – so few bothered me, and we got most everything done that we wanted to…It’s why you keep jobs like this, frankly: easy work and not a whole hell of a lot of it, with lots of time for projects.
Is This The Party To Whom I Am Not Speaking?
The fly in the ointment continues to be all hotel cell phones remain tits up…I am not making that up…They’ve been in a non-working status for a while now, too, evidently because of how the home office pays its bills.
But they’ve never been down this long before, and we strongly suspect their service has been canceled…This means no 21st-century comms with Housekeeping and Maintenance, with ol’ Sparrow sometimes reduced to actually going and telling them in person when they’re not at their desk phones.
The Weekly Visit/Sparrow Reminisces
Dray the Dairy Delivery Driver (D4) was around at his new reality time of 0230 or so…Of course, we had fresh coffee for him, tho the fly in the ointment is he clocks in while he’s still at the hotel, and between that and 21st century on-board truck technology (21COBTT), the branch can keep tabs on how much time D4 spends farting around at the hotel, with D4 noting they don’t really want a whole hell of a lot of it.
Still tho, D4 got in about how long last week was, including a 19.5-hour day that sounds like it completely sucked hind tit…Now, he didn’t exceed his federally-mandated limit on the road, but back at the plant he was given the opportunity to put in even more time on the loading dock…We would’ve told someone to perform a physical impossibility, but D4 noted how they laid off a lot of warehouse workers, and his truck had to be loaded for the next day, and there was no one else to do it
This reminded us of a 20-hour day we put in working the armored truck years ago, which only the longest of longtime readers may – but probably don’t – recall…(For security reasons, it was known as the Doily Delivery Company back then.)…Ol’ Sparrow was driving that day, and Brian and yours truly pulled out at 0600 for a trip to a town on the interstate to meet a truck out of the big city that had money for banks and ATMs for us…It was March and snowing heavily, and the usual 90-minute trip took almost three hours, which didn’t matter much because the other truck was late…We get back to town in good enuff time, tho, and we’re done with our route and ready to head back to that town at 1730.
We didn’t get home until 0200…We had to’ve been one of the last vehicles to head up the mountain before the pass was closed, and there was big fun on the pass awaiting all of us…Travel was very slow, and there were two whiteout instances where yours truly chose not to move.
Brian: It’s not safe to stop, Sparrow…
Sparrow: It’s not safe to move, either, partner.
We both had points; stopping put you at risk for getting hit, while moving put you at risk for going over the side, with yours truly deciding getting hit was preferable to going down the side of a mountain.
In retrospect, we should not’ve headed out…We should’ve called the branch and said we’re not leaving town tho, of course, we would do whatever was required to keep our stuff secure, which probably would’ve meant staying with it all nite, tho we might’ve been able to leave it at the county jail’s parking lot, or maybe leave it in a bank’s vault…(At the end of the day, we would have money removed from ATMs and, as I recall, cash and coin banks were sending to the branch.)
Aichiwawa
The big news is we went to the Mexican joint in the next county this morning, for the first time in a while…There were changes, neither of them good…One, it was $4 more expensive…Two, there was less cheese in the quesadilla, and our fave burrito was smaller.
I am not making any of that up; inflation has come to the fave Mexican joint!!!…It shouldn’t be surprising, I guess, but it is demoralizing…The food was still good, but it wasn’t $4 more good for smaller amounts…So we’re probably not going to go back, because what’s the point???…A fave, dive Mexican joint should leave you happy, not demoralized.
Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1130 Tuesday until 1830 Tuesday…7.0 hours for the day and 24.0 hours for the week, both strong totals.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.
The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
