The Diary of a Nobody/April 21

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, April 20
I actually had two phone calls within the first half-hour of reporting for duty at the hotel…Both were looking for rooms, one for tonight and one for Tuesday…The first was a chick who sounded too young to be looking for a room this late at night…I told her we were closed, perhaps no the best choice of words.

You’re open right now.
Her tone was snotty as if she’d caught me in a lie, which she had.
You’re right; I’m sorry…You have to be an established business customer to get a room tonight.

She hemmed and hawed a bit before realizing no meant no…I asked the other guy what brought him to town and he said he was making a day trip, currently a violation of a government edict, and I told him I was not able to take leisure bookings…He sounded surprised…He is an idiot and I got to thinking these two calls were from someone running a check to see if he could catch some yo-yo night auditor into booking an unauthorized reservation.

Had some Legion district commander business to take care of when I woke up this evening. The state commander, Dean, had put it all over Faceplant that the good folks up in District 14 had reached 100% of their membership goal, only the second district in the state to do so and it should be noted the Legion membership year starts on July 1…Good…Membership is challenging up here because we’re mainly rural posts that kids don’t come back to after they’ve served, so our membership is older than some other districts and when older members die, as they tend to do, there aren’t younger members to replace them….I sent an email out to district officers thanking and congratulating them on their accomplishment.

The only downside is this makes me eligible for a free trip to the Legion national convention which, unfortunately, has been cancelled, so even if I won there’s no convention to go to.

Everything’s been cancelled actually…The state convention is cancelled and Stanko, the district adjutant, sent out an email earlier this week cancelling Saturday’s district convention…He sent it on my behalf which was funny because I hadn’t actually made the decision, he had, tho we had talked about it…That’s OK…As district commander, my responsibilities are executive and inspirational…I announce where we’re going and provide the inspiration to get there and I am pleased to leave routine matters, like cancelling district conventions because of an international pandemic, to him.

We were supposed to have elections Saturday but, again on my behalf, Stanko announced all district officers will continue in their roles until new elections can be held, meaning ol’ Sparrow will serve his fourth or fifth term as district commander…I forget which it is.

The MPG figure for the new ride continues to go up…I filled up after the hotel this morning and the figure was a whopping 36.697 MPG!!!…I am not making that up…It’s a half-a-mile per gallon more than last week’s impressive figure and just a bit less than the record 37-something we got on a road trip featuring lots of highway miles…As usual, I have some zero clue why the number continues to rise…I do use cruise control a lot and I’m seldom more than 5 MPH more than the speed limit but who the hell knows.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Tuesday until 1830 Tuesday…10.0 hours for the day and 25.0 hours for the week, the highest Tuesday Total (TT) in two months.

The Zzzz-Sleep shot I took when I got home did its work splendidly…I was dozing off almost as soon as I laid down on the couch to read…I did get up twice to use the can, tho, but otherwise, it was a wonderful day’s rest…I slept deeply and dreamt vividly.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
