The Diary of a Nobody/December 9

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, December 9
The new girl Nicole appears to be leaving her mark as ol’ Sparrow’s noticed a couple of things this week that weren’t noticed before.

One, the stack of Morning Coffee Service (MCS) napkins are now twirled, that fancy-pants arrangement where they look to be in a spiral of some sort…The only other time it’s been done is when the owner’s daughter worked here and worked nite audit…So suspicion is falling on Nicole because Amy’s hardly doing it on my nites off and Lord knows yours truly certainly isn’t because it should be plain to even the most casual observer that I have neither the interest in nor aptitude for stuff like this.

The other big change comes at the front desk itself, at the right computer station, the one I use night in and night out and will probably end in the Smithsonian one day…There’s a small wicker basket on the counter to the left that holds things like pens and some markers, drink cards and some other stuff useful to front desk clerks…Next to it has been the plastic container that held the paper clips I use when preparing registration cards for the day’s arrivals.

I say has because now someone has actually put it in the basket…I am not making that up and it took me a couple of seconds to find it the first time…Thing is, out of habit, I still put it next to the basket, but it is always back in the basket when I need them again.

In other news from the Paper Clip Desk, someone – probably that darn Nicole again – has taken to putting two sizes of paper clips in there, the ones that have been in there for years and smaller ones…I completely disapprove of this and had half a mind this morning to take the small ones out, but that would be showing more interest in paper clip allocation (PCA) than yours truly really wants to display, especially during the holidays.

The knife got some decent use this morning…First, there was a fresh box of coffee packets to open which, of course, means the tops need to be cut off the new box and the old box broken down…The old box had about a dozen or coffee packs left – a pretty good total when it’s slow – and it didn’t need to be switched out right now but, you know, if I didn’t do it today someone else would have done it before I returned Friday night and then the knife would have missed out on some solid usage…The box of French vanilla creamer in the back coffee room was running low, too, so that was changed but the knife isn’t required when breaking the old box down because the bottoms are glued and not taped.

Slow at the Veterans Service Office today…Recall I took Monday off – an utterly stupid move as things turned out – and you might think there would be some things requiring attention but you’d be wrong…There was one phone message – from a gal at the state council on aging…At first I thought she might be calling to see if I was preparing for old age but she just wanted to say hi and report she’s new to the job and to see if I would call her back,

Well, sure, of course, I will…Her name is Leigh and she was about to get ready for a Zoom meeting, tho, so she called me back and I’m still not entirely certain what we talked about except I did tell her what I did – like others, she was under the impression I worked for the VA – and tho chatty she was rather pleasant and I did send her a link that had contact information for all the state VSOs because her area included all the counties up here.

It was good to get back to the hot springs for the weekly Wednesday PM soak (WPMS)…Recall there was an AM soak two weeks before flying out on vacation, so the last WPMS was three weeks ago and it was good to see the place was open despite the fact we are back near-lockdown up here…It was pretty slow, too, and warm – 40ish – so you could be outside without turning into a snowman.

It’s been warm since spring…Regular readers of this crap know last winter was cold and had more snow than usual but it’s been warm and dry since spring and that hasn’t changed yet…The Shire, save for a small amount of ice on the driveway, has no snow on the ground.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: Per standard Wednesday policy, there wasn’t any sleep to report today.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
