The Diary of a Nobody/February 20

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, February 20
Had a great workout this morning…I had unlimited time, so I did a full one and while there were a couple of exercises I was only able to get up eight times on the final set, I was still strong.

I also got some instruction on how to do pull-ups…Ol’ Sparrow has never – and never means not once – done a complete pull-up…Hell, I can’t ever remember coming close…It certainly wasn’t a requirement in the Navy.

I forgot how we got on the subject…About three-quarters of the way thru my workout a guy named Jerry wanders in and later Ryan the Owner comes down and he and Jerry start yapping and the next thing they know they’re at the pull-up bar, which is right near where I am doing tricep work, the last body part of the Sparrow workout…I mentioned I had never done a pull-up and Ryan shows me a technique where instead of merely blindly trying to pull yourself straight up, you use a motion where you are trying to bend the bar…So I tried it and, of course, I still couldn’t do a full pull up, but I suppose the technique has merit because I did get up about a centimeter or two higher than I am usually able to.

Went to the next county and got a new phone holster today…My old one had a rivet bust at the bottom (it loops thru your belt) and it was quality gear so I took a pic of it and sent to customer service and said look, it’s been over a year but this cost $60 and appeared to be quality gear and I think it was reasonable to get at least five years, and maybe ten years, of service out of this puppy…I added they, too, would probably have expected more than 18-months of service, too, but no dice…I got a prompt reply that heralding the splendors of their return policy, after which they noted they considered this normal wear and tear and would not be sending me a new one.

Well, OK…I like having a belt holster and I wanted one right now and I certainly wasn’t going to buy the old one again…My first stop was the ranch store, figuring they’d have good ones because cowboys certainly can’t have their phones falling out while punching doggies…They had a small, lousy selection so on a whim I went to the nearby chain hardware store, where I was the victim of some really good service…I was greeted as soon as I walked in by Brittany, who I waddled up to and told her what I need and she immediately passed me off on Daniel who took me to the hardware section where they, too had a modest, tho useful, selection.

I found what I needed…It’s made of the same durable nylon some other stuff I have is made of and the new iPhone, with a small protective case, fits great, it has a Velcro closure and there are a variety of ways to secure it to the belt…There was a clip, which I don’t really trust, plus two ways to loop it thru your belt: the phone could be either perpendicular or parallel to your belt which is exactly what I was looking for because ol’ Sparrow prefers to have it parallel…Now, I’m not heralding its brilliance, but it will more than suffice…I really liked the old one and would’ve preferred it not break, but you must be adaptable in this life…It also cost $10, $50 less than the old holster and I’d be surprised if I don’t get more than 18-months of service out of it.

Almost funny was the fact I insisted on wearing it out so there ol’ Sparrow was at the checker taking off his belt and due to the way the belt is threaded thru the loops and the side I wear the holster on I was obliged to take it virtually the whole way off which couldn’t have looked too good on the security monitors.

I went to the retailer, too…Recently, I’ve rediscovered the pleasures of those canned deviled ham and chicken salad deals, the one with the devil on the package…Now, I know I cut out bread because of blood sugar concerns, but some research shows that whole wheat bread is OK and The Wife is still gone and I am still can’t be bothered to cook for myself, so sandwiches are still a good way to go.

Pa Sparrow used to get these all the time for us growing up…I remember as a kid a can yielded two sandwiches, but bread is bigger now and I’m still a growing boy, so the yield is one sandwich, tho there is still a small amount left over, which I’ll eat on its own.

The big news is I did not – repeat did NOT – go to my fave Mexican joint…For some reason, the new ride didn’t pull in there automatically and I wasn’t feeling like it anyway.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1800 Wednesday until 0100 Thursday…7.0 hours for the night and 33.5 hours for the week…Good totals, but someday I am going to do the research into why I no longer sleep 15 hours on Wednesday night.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
