The Diary of a Nobody/February 3

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, February 3
About 0600 a lady with an eastern European accent and wearing a coffee shop uniform wondering where her car was…She reported it wasn’t where she’d left it and asked if we’d towed it…Regular readers of this crap know we would never do something like that…As I’ve noted here before, I’ve worked hotels a lot over the years and I have yet to see one tow a car…Let me tell you something, one, we don’t want the hassle of having it towed and two, we don’t want to risk offending a guest…You could park in the lobby and we wouldn’t do anything…I told the woman we hadn’t towed anyone so she went out to look again and she didn’t come back so I’m presuming she either found her car or she found me so hopeless to deal with she took the bus to work.

I blew off the Veterans Service Office (VSO) today…I was feeling a lot better when my hotel shift ended and I strongly suspected a full day of sleep, aided by some PM cold medicine, would finish up my recovery and I was right…I woke up feeling great, so good I had morning coffee for the first time in a few days and even got back in the gym.

Key was this Gypsy cold remedy tea I discovered…It is made with the elderberry flower and I drank it regularly the last three days and it probably took five days off of my recovery time…Usually, the annual winter cold will keep me sickies for over a week, but I’m all better after five days.

On Faceplant this afternoon, conveniently right after business hours, there was a notice that there would be a planned power outage in our small town Tuesday…The location, the notice said, was “on” Main Street, the street just north of us and 3rd and 4th streets, which cross Main Street on the other side of town…The outage would be between 0900 and 1400 and regular readers of this crap know that while The Shire’s address is Maple Street, we are on the corner with Main Street.

Well, hell, this is not too much of a problem for those who will be at work but crap, that is when ol’ Sparrow sleeps and a quick look at the forecast shows it’s going to be all of 14 degrees and that’s at midday…Not only is that when I get my beauty rest, but we can’t have the cat freezing to death, either…I messaged the power company to ask WTF but they’re a small-town utility so their help desk is only open for five minutes every other Wednesday so I haven’t heard back yet.

I’m not an expert on the matter, but well below freezing for five hours – more when something inevitably gets f*cked up – could cause problems because all heating elements in the house need electricity…Sure the main heater is gas, but it still needs power to run, well, I’m not sure what it needs power to run, but it’s something because whenever power goes out so does the heater…I did some research tho, and if needed I should be able to pick up a propane heater at either the retailer or the hardware store…Regular readers of this crap know this is probably an invitation to set The Shire ablaze, but I’m able to start the snowblower with The Wife still gone, so I might be OK…I could get a room at the hotel, but I can’t ask the cat to face a risk I am unable to face right along with her.

There is no reason to dive back into a max weight session after being sickies, so I kept it both short and relatively light tonight…Yes, I could’ve done more, but the key to success in the weight room is never to do too much…Of course, you want to do as much as you can, but coming back after a long layoff or having been sick is not that time.

Mr Sorensen was there, too…It turns out he is ending his day and I asked how long it takes him to fall asleep and he said he’d start nodding off around 2200 or so…(It was about 1930 at the time.)

I’ve never concluded my day by working out…The trainer I worked with when I first started in 2002 said the best time to workout is fully rested on an empty stomach, and I’ve always stuck to that…Heck, sometimes reading gets my second wind going and it takes a while to fall asleep, so I can’t imagine the effect weightlifting would have.

He also said he won’t eat till breakfast, either, something else I don’t understand at all…It’s working for him, tho, because he’s a lean, plainly strong man.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Monday until 1730 Monday…8.5 hours for the day and 15.5 hours for the week…As noted, I cheated with some PM cold medicine and it worked, putting me to sleep and knocking out the last vestiges of my cold.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
