The Diary of a Nobody/January 27

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, January 27

Pretty slow tonight, tho at 0115 or so I had a call from a lady staying down the street who was upset that the rathole couldn’t provide a room with a window that locked…After assuring her I could provide a room offering full security she came over and booked for three nights…What’s funny is her other co-workers are staying here and she’s a rewards club member so why she was booked elsewhere is unknown…For her part, she blamed someone at work…A thorough sort, she actually called me a few minutes later to report her room “was satisfactory in all respects”.

We only have one kind of water now at the sundry stand, the $1 bottles that some research shows come directly from a municipal water supply…We are out of the $2.50 smart water and have been for a while actually…I don’t know what the deal is…I’m only a night auditor and not in charge of inventory, but they were pretty popular and there’s no doubt we’re losing money, especially since everyone at the front desk usually gives the $1 bottles away, especially if the lobby is otherwise empty and it would be too much bother to actually ring the sale up.

One thing I’ve been doing regularly is shredding a Nite Audit Checklist every morning…Recall Assistant Front Desk Manager Devani made a whole stack of them, a complete waste because ol’ Sparrow has never filled out a checklist…No one does here…As noted, it would be a pity to have the stack go unused and have management fret over why they weren’t be used, so I’ve taken to shredding one each night, to save management the worry…It’s easy to remember, too, because it’s in the same filing cabinet as the Housekeeping Report I fill out for Gloria every morning.

Called off the Veterans Service Office today…Actually, I texted off, texting Jenn the exciting news…Jenn is my supervisor altho she has no idea what my job entails and I don’t answer to her, I merely informed her so she would know why the office wasn’t open when it normally is…Even as a part-time VSO I earn tons of PTO, tho I think I may be out of personal hours, because I used no small amount of them over the holidays.

I didn’t go in because I was tired and I wanted to sleep…Officially…I could easily have plowed thru four hours at the VSO and gotten a good rest before heading into the hotel, but recall I blew off Sunday’s workout and I really wanted to get a weight session in, especially with the prospect of getting another one in Tuesday…I did, but only a short session because I slept a bit longer than I wanted to.

It was a strong session, tho…The upped weights from last time were achieved – 90 lbs on the cable shoulder press and 37.5 lbs on each side of the bicep z-bar curl – and I even upped the final set on squats to 45 lbs…Now, I just started squatting again so upping weights often is common, but it’s still pleasing…And 45 lbs was a challenge, tho I got it moved ten times…This isn’t an awful lot of weight, honestly, and there will be a time when 45 lbs is my starter weight.

I’m starting to up the weights on the first two sets, too, the light and medium weights…You don’t want to exert the muscles too much on the first two sets…Their purpose is to warm up the muscle not work it, laying the foundation for getting the final set up ten times…So the weight is hardly scientifically determined…On the other hand, you don’t want something you can easily blow thru, either, and it was time to up the lower weights a notch.

The big news is the curtains that had been up on the abandoned diner downtown have been taken down…The lights weren’t on, tho, so it was hard to tell if anything’s going on, and I wasn’t smart enuff to see if the For Lease sign was still up, but even the mere thought there might be a new diner on the horizon is good for morale.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Monday until 1830 Monday…9.0 hours, every one of them needed after Sunday’s four-hour fiasco…And I remain pleased to report that I am still only getting up to use the can once…The days/nights of rising every couple of hours appear to be a thing of the past…The big key, I think, is the grapeseed extract I’ve been taking…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
