The Diary of a Nobody/January 31

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, January 31
Sickies…Regular readers of this crap know I don’t get sickies too often and when I do it usually lasts about a week-and-a-half or so: three days coming, three days here and three days departing…Right now it’s just a scratchy throat and some sneezing.

As a result, I didn’t work out, tho, either Thursday or Friday…Regrettable because I rested and, of course, have had some strong sessions recently, but you do not lift when you are sick…Your body has enuff to do trying to get you healthy again without having to worry about dealing with pre-workout drinks or supplying blood to working muscles.

Thursday I was pretty useful even tho my pledge was to do nothing…I went to the town hall and paid the water bill, necessary because The Wife had neglected and we had a notice to pay it or else…Then I went to the market for some provisions…With The Wife gone I have, of course, resorted to assorted bachelor tendencies and can’t be bothered to cook too much…So I get the same things…The local market puts out a pretty good orange chicken and some fried chicken filets (they call them fritters) so I’ve been getting that pretty regularly…Now, it’s not a complete reversion to bachelor ways because I am not eating over the sink, I do take it to the desk, but I am not cooking too much besides post-workout beef patties.

I really like the orange chicken…It comes in a serving that satisfies a growing boy like me tho it is probably meant for two people…Sometimes they’re out, tho, and I have to go with habanero stuff, which is a tad hotter than I like, but if that’s my biggest problem life’s OK.

The big news is it took 15 minutes to find my wallet this morning…It wasn’t in Pa Sparrow’s old valet where it usually is but this really isn’t that big a deal because invariably it shows up in the back pocket of the last pair of pants I wore…Unfortunately, those pants – the quilted blue jeans – were in the dryer…Crap…I checked both the washer and the dryer, tho, and no wallet…Double crap…I checked the bedroom, around the hamper and it wasn’t there…I checked the kitchen around the washer and dryer and found nothing…Well, that isn’t true…I found several things, none of which were my wallet…Back to the desk…More nothing…Then I wasted time checking places there was no place it could be, like the trash and my backpack before grabbing a flashlight and finding it on the far side of the washer…I’d looked there but apparently I’m blind now without a spotlight…I was glad to find it..Sure, it would’ve been a pain to get a new driver’s license and debit cards, but I’d blown $60 on the wallet and I’m grateful I don’t have to buy a new one.

In medical news, I am still sickies, tho well enuff to report for duty at the VSO but my right ear has so much ear wax I am almost deaf…This is where having The Wife still off in Kansas is bad…You keep a wife on staff for things like this and, in fact, she’s handled this ailment with ease a few years ago…For my part, I bought some drops and one of those bulb syringes last week, keeping it on the kitchen table and staring at it crossly for a few days until I got around to using it today…Of course, ol’ Sparrow couldn’t be bothered to read the instructions so he just threw some drops in there and started blasting away with the bulb…When that didn’t work I read the instructions and that didn’t work either, but it should be noted the instructions said it could take several treatments.

Slow at the VSO today…I did have a message from a gal at the main hospital south of here saying there was going to be a town hall in April in the next county and to call her for details…I followed instructions and she said she’d send me some info and that I could be as involved or not as I wanted…The one last year was just after I was hired and I understood nothing and I’m not really looking forward to this years, but I’ll go anyway. =

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
