The Diary of a Nobody/January 9

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, January 9
I’m committed to taking good care of the cat while The Wife is in Kansas tending to her sister…Usually, she fusses with her water dish and cat box, while I am in charge of the canned yummy ration and her dry food…I took care of everything this morning…She got her usual morning canned yummy ration, of course, and her dry food was running low so I tossed what was left and refilled that and got her some freshwater, too…I cleaned her cat box, too…It didn’t really need it, but I was doing everything anyway and my own experience is clean crapper is good for morale.

(It should also be noted we keep a red coffee cup filled with water on the kitchen table because the cat also enjoys sticking a paw in and drinking from that for some reason…If fact, we think she gets most of her water from that.)

I went to the next country, too…Ostensibly, I went to get the mouthwash I can’t get in town and to take my desktop in to see about getting fixed but it is hardly the Upset of the Year to learn I dined my fave Mexican joint, too…It’s lousy post-workout nutrition, of course, but when in the next county do as the next countians do, or something like that.

The desktop stopped turning on a few weeks ago…I tested it left and right and nothing…All right…I scoped out a couple of places in the next county and no one was at the first one because he was out in the field but he left a sign with his number on it…No answer…I left a message and went to the second place…They were in and they would be delighted to take a look at it…I went and brought it in and first the kid tested the cord…Worked good…Then he plugged it into the unit and BOOM after a few seconds it was up and running…Crap…I felt like an idiot…I paid them the requested $20 and took it home and, of course, it wouldn’t work.

Double crap…I suspected I made the mistake of pressing the power button in too long so I merely held it in for a split-second and BOOM the lights in the lower right corner came on…It hadn’t done anything for a month or so and it took a while to get back to normal, but I’m writing this on it, so it’s working fine.

I got home at 1130 or so and regular readers of this crap know that by 1130 on Thursday’s I’m more or less done for the day, however, I was up late, at 0530, about three hours later than usual, see Sleep Log below…This was great because there’s a Legion meeting tonight and as district commander and county veterans service officer it’s kind of nice if I show up.

I got a lot done this morning…In addition to tending to the cat and doing some lifting, I got some laundry done and watered the plants and The Wife called and I went thru the mail and we went over the bills…Long-time readers of this crap know I have little interest in, and even less acumen for, bills, but I went in with a constructive attitude and managed no to be a complete obstruction to progress.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1930 Wednesday until 2330 Wednesday
0230 Thursday until 0530 Thursday

7.0 hours for the night and 28.0 hours for the week.

I couldn’t believe when I woke up and the clock only said 2330…I used the can and usually it should have been a simple matter to get back to sleep, but not tonight, so I got up and did some project work…Then I did some reading…Then I started dozing off, thank god, and ended up with three satisfying more hours, which was enuff to allow me to get into the gym for a good workout.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
