The Diary of a Nobody/July 25

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, July 25
There was a post-it note next to the thermostat at the front desk advising not to put it below 70…General Manager Barbara’s name was invoked, too…This wasn’t a bulletin because  Q regularly turns it down low enuff to store meat and even ol’ Sparrow has been known to turn it down to 67 or so at times simply because we’re obliged to wear a long-sleeved shirt and a vest and 70 can be a tad warm-ish…I wanted to whine about it, of course, but 70 isn’t completely unreasonable and I don’t pay the electric bill, so I am complying.

Busy to start, too…All three arrivals came in the first hour, plus there were two walk-ins and I didn’t get drawers counted and retired to the back office until almost midnight.

I have been particularly diligent in my scratch paper duties and I added no less than 40 sheets tonight…I am not making that up…And I didn’t even have to use the Departure Report, either…There were no less than eight blank, second pages from registration cards for Sunday’s arrivals, plus there were a couple of folios I’d printed out that didn’t need to be delivered…The stack is now up to a bit over two inches, not quite reaching the bottom of the monitor, but pretty close.

38.468 mpg.

Sigh…I knew we’d be short of the magic 40 mpg mark, but it would’ve been good for morale to at least have been above 39…You hate to think the days of flirting with 40 mpg are over – and I’m certainly not ready to say they are – but we reached it once and there were no guarantees it would happen once, so we’ll take it.

I bought some different canned yummies for the cat at the retailer and their first issue was this morning…For years we’ve been going with the Seafood Grilled box, which offers three flavors, all of which the cat enjoys and, from time to time, when they don’t have the box in stock, the cat will get that Tuna & Shrimp Feast stuff that looks like it would make a good sandwich of you threw some mayonnaise in there…However, based on the way the cat ravages that new chicken salad from the retailer that she seems to like as much as I do, I got a couple of cans of Chicken Feast with Gravy and I am pleased to report she was all over it.

Took the River Route for tonight’s walk…Recall, that was going to be the route for Friday morning’s walk but that was rained out and while there aren’t official protocols on the matter I was in the mood for the River Route so I took it instead of tossing it aside for another one…It was a nice, cool summer evening – autumn’s second hint, after the first leaves changing color.

The big news is that the new construction house on North Street appears to be occupied…I didn’t notice anything heading out, but on the way in the front door was open and one of those tabletop soccer games was visible and there was a TV on, too…There still isn’t a front lawn nor are there steps to the front door, but there are signs of life.

I got some watering done, too, tonight…I did a big swatch in the front, the part that fronts Main Street and when I got back from the walk I did the corner by Maple Street and the alley which has gone noticeably browner since the trees were trimmed last week and there isn’t as much shade…There was hope here at The Shire that our really snowy winter was merely a prelude to a rainy spring and summer but that hasn’t been the case and lawns all over town aren’t as green as usual…The lawn could use a mowing, too, and I texted Cody to see if he was up for a mowing this week.

I gotta be honest, there would not have been violent objection from yours truly to enjoying Prime Rib Nite at the new restaurant, but I was unwilling to rush morning routine and, of course, the walk had to be taken…Had they been open later than 2000 I would have made it, and the way restaurants close in this town there’s no guarantee it will be around next Saturday, but we all roll the dice and take our chances in this life.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
0930 Saturday until 1630 Saturday…7.0 hours for the day and 45.0 for the week.

The sleep month is over, too, and the weekly average is 47.7 with a rolling three-month weekly average of 47.4 hours…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
