The Diary of a Nobody/June 18

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, June 18
And the gym is open!!!

I am not making that up…It was right there on their Faceplant page: Open!!!

It’s about time…The gym in town opened a few days ago and we were all waiting for Ryan to follow suit, too, and I am pleased to report it didn’t take that long to get ready to go…The gym bag was in its usual place on the floor and the only thing I’d taken out were the sneakers, which were nearby, also on the floor…I dug out the pre-workout supplements and while I had the foresight to have some ground beef on hand for post-workout nutrition, it was frozen, so I took emergency defrosting measures…I do have a microwave, but I don’t like using those for thawing, so I put the package in one of those zip-lock baggies and put in a pot with some warm water, which I then put on the stove on very low heat.

This showed mixed results…On the one hand, sure, it thawed the meat out but the outer layer was partially cooked, meaning that it was tuff to make a patty out of, but if that is my biggest problem this week – and it might well be – then I’m doing all right.

The only fly in the ointment was the gym now opens at 0600, instead of being open 24 hours and I showed up, in my glee,  at 0515, so I went back home and sat for 45 minutes.

The first thing I did was weigh myself, to see how much I’ve gained…I presumed a couple of pounds at least but the scale actually reported I’d I lost six pounds…I didn’t necessarily believe that…I’ve been eating like an oink-oink since The Ex left and while the walks helped mitigate the damage I haven’t walked in over a week…So, skeptical, I took two 10-lb weights and put them on the scale and they weighed in at 21 pounds, so it looks like I really did drop a few pounds…Go figure.

Being in the gym again was like visiting an old friend; it was great to be back…I did a long workout – two exercises per body part – but I started in slow, of course, the general rule being the final set would be what my starter set was before lockdown and I more or less did that.

I made three stops on my usual Thursday trip to the next county…The first was at the hardware store for some mosquito stuff for the yard and some stuff to remove grass from the part of the driveway that isn’t getting used anymore…The girl there recommended a powder deal that you toss on the areas where mosquitos congregate…I have some zero clue where these places are, I only see them flying around and I can hardly toss the powder randomly into the air…They had some stuff that would help the driveway grass, too, but it was in a humongous quantity that would last me till I’m 80 and I didn’t want them, so she took my name and number and said she’d call when they smaller bottle was in…To help combat the problem naturally, I ‘ve taken to parking on the left side of the driveway, hoping regular usage will drive the grass away…But then the grass will start growing on the other side, the side I usually park on…Sigh…It never ends.

After that I went to the retailer for a variety of things; some of the donut shop knock-off coffee, some butter and I can never remember whether I use salted of unsalted and I happened to guess right with the blue, unsalted box… I also got some of my fave mouthwash and some earplugs because the ones I have are all gross now, and some kitty litter and I am sad to report my three-pack of reader glasses appear to be gone for good…The retailer in town was out and so is the one in the next county…I got some cans of that sandwich spread with the pic of Satan on the label, two each of chicken, corned beef and deviled ham…There were a couple of other things, too.

The final stop, and this will surprise you, was at the Mexican joint…If they kept my credit card on file all I would have to do is walk in and BOOM, lunch would be brought to my usual table…I haven’t actually had to order in a while now…Dining here wasn’t straight out of the Post-Workout Nutrition Handbook, but I consoled myself with the lie that the extra weightlifting activity would better expend the calories.

The big news is I used the side door off the carport for the first time in a while…Recall with the robins in residence I’ve deferred to them and have been using the front door…But today I was out watering the lawn and set the sprinkler near the carport and I glanced around and the coast appeared to be clear: no grown robins were visible – which I’ve learned means squat – and there weren’t any beaks sticking out of the nest, either, so maybe they’re gone and normal entry and egress procedures can be resumed.

The afternoon was very leisurely…I try not to project work on Thursday afternoons because I spend enuff time in front of a computer the rest of the week and I like the break…I read in the chair while the cat assumed her now-usual PM position on a kitchen chair, tho she followed me into bed and perched on my back while I dozed off.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1800 Wednesday until 0100 Thursday…7.0 hours for the night and 30.0 hours for the week, hardly a Thursday record, but still a lusty total.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
