The Diary of a Nobody/June 22

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, June 22
Back to a reasonable slow night, but off and on in the back office ol’ Sparrow was obliged to dodge mosquitos and I strongly suspect another one got my ear, the right one this time…I don’t like this and I’m wondering if I should start fumigating as part of my pre-shift routine, maybe along with taking my temperature and stuff…Since mosquitos carry diseases and whatnot, I should probably log Fumigation Protocols on the health sheet we’ve been filling out for a while now.

One thing I’ve always wondered about since I started is whether or not the bottom creamers ever get used…Recall, creamers are stacked two high and I don’t know about anybody else, but I always restock creamers after a few are used so, unless there is a sudden wave at Morning Coffee Service, the bottoms ones seldom get used…Well, we have a new brand of French vanilla creamer so I will be keeping track in what may well be the first creamer field test in history…The old brand is on the bottom and the new creamers are at the top and if the old brand creamers are still there two weeks from now, we’ll know we are not doing a very good job of rotating stock…I have no idea what to expect, frankly…Maybe someone on the other shifts rotates them, tho I don’t think so.

With the exception of a few scattered sheets, I haven’t replenished the scratch paper pile, underneath the back office monitor, since the Virus Era began three months ago…It’s pretty low, too…I haven’t measured it – I don’t know why I haven’t measured it, Lord knows I’ve had the time – but if I had to guess, I’d throw a quarter-inch out there, just for funsies.

Front Desk Manager Brandon hasn’t mentioned it, yet, but I think he will if I don’t get on the stick pretty soon…Business, of course, is increasing and we’ll all be back to five days a week by the end of the month probably and scratch paper needs, of course, will absolutely skyrocket and the crew is counting on me to have a decent supply on hand…Or at least I think they are…I don’t really know.

At the Veterans Service Office, we still aren’t entirely sure when the county building where my office is will reopen again..Fully re-open…Recall those rascals in the DMV are open for walk-ins, but that’s about it…Part of me says keep it closed until the mask requirement is lifted, but that was recently extended here in the county thru July 31 and if the entire building is opened before then it wouldn’t make sense for me to be the lone holdout…Perhaps, I will only be available by appointment…We’ll see.

There’s a new house for sale in our part of our small town, about three houses down the street from the dump that is three houses down Main Street from The Shire…Three bedrooms, a nice, fenced yard and detached garage for only 300, about 55 more than the dump down the street…Now that I think about it, The Ex and I looked at it in 2014 when we were looking to buy – toured it, in fact – and we kind of liked it and they were asking 150 for it back then, 60 more than we ended up paying for The Shire…We didn’t really need three bedrooms tho, and The Shire, tho a lot smaller, is a corner lot with a nicer yard and with the way things ended up, I am very pleased we went with The Shire.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1430 Monday until 2130 Monday…7.0 hours for the day and 11.0 hours for the week…Far from a nap, that was a heck of a sleep, and I could’ve used more, frankly, but Tuesday is all-you-can-get sleep, so what the heck.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
