The Diary of a Nobody/October 1

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, October 1

The big news doing end of the month at the hotel is I was able to assemble the box that we put the month’s registration cards in without putting in for overtime…Regular readers of this crap know folding the box usually causes no small amount of problems for ol’ Sparrow…One, I don’t have a knack for crap like this and, two, it’s not as if I fold these on a daily basis…I do them once a month, at the most, and to expect ol’ Sparrow to retain this non-vital knowledge is unreasonable.

I was on it today, tho…The problem was with Side A…The instructions tell you to fold it inside the box and I always thought this was the outside of the bottom two layers…Wrong-o…It’s the inside…Side C is the bottom of the two outside side, Side A is the inside…Realizing this was key because when I was forcing Side A to be the outside bottom side it made Sides B and D supremely difficult to stuff inside…Difficult enuff that, quite frankly, ol’ Sparrow should have, perhaps, realized that wasn’t the way it was supposed to go, but the fact I didn’t realize this is hardly a bulletin…Once I let Side A be Side A and be the inside side, everything was smooth as glass and the box was assembled in a couple of minutes instead of yours truly requiring a coffee break.

Everything else went smoothly, too…Sometimes end of the month doesn’t…Sometimes end of the month falls on a weekend in busy season and there are late arrivals and walk-ins and phone calls and you’re busting hump for eight hours which, of course, goes against everything I stand for…Sometimes, tho, end of the month falls on a weekday in slow season and you’re done with everything, including the night’s project work, with time to spare.

The only downside to the night was Sparrow’s Morning Coffee Service (SMCS) was late…It was 0515 and I hadn’t even made the first pot of coffee yet…The problem was I was out of my routine…Usually when reporting for duty one of the first things I do is make a pot of coffee for myself…I don’t drink all of it, in fact, I seldom have more than a cup, but habit’s habit and there was some coffee leftover from late afternoon so I didn’t make that crucial first pot because ol’ Sparrow isn’t too picky…Our pots keep coffee warm for hours and even when I get there it’s still hot, tho it does taste old…OK, yours truly has had some bad coffee in his time and it doesn’t bother me.

About 0313 a lady of 154 comes up and requests six wash rags and four hand towels…Wash rags and hand towels are from the strangest requests you’ll have working a front desk, but the specific numbers, and the time, of course, we’re curious…Oh-dark-thirty and you need six wash rags and four hand towels???…I couldn’t decide whether I did or did not want to know why these specific numbers of what’s known in the trade as terry (for terry cloth) were required right now…Maybe it’s some pagan ritual…It’s of no consequence…Inwardly, I applauded her commitment to cleanliness and toweling off afterward and, as it was, we had what she needed in the back office, so she didn’t have to wait for me to go find and deliver them.

A good, tho abbreviated workout today…Though I was up early enuff for a full workout, end of month set me behind on project work and some things I wanted to get done I didn’t…Still tho, I got max weight up and worked the usual body parts, tho with one exercise instead of the usual two…There as another dude there, too, which is rare…Usually I have the place to myself.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Tuesday until 1630 Tuesday…7.0 hours for the day and 20.5 hours for the week…Again I set the alarm so I could get some lifting in and I woke up feeling good, not like last time when I set the alarm, got up, yawned and went back to sleep.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
